Okay... as promised a quick AdWords tutorial / just sharing what I've learned
For the purpose of this exercise, lets use the fact that Colleen still has some 'free AdWords cash' from bluehost and lets put it to good use
I ran a really quick analysis (which is what I do thoroughly before I do ANYTHING w/ AdWords) Take a quick look at it here and I'll try and break it down
okay...to start off, you'd want to have a list of thousands of keywords (thats why this is a quickie analysis (I didn't have an hour to spare during this post-a-thon)
So lets work with what we've got!
1.) Keywords (there's only 19 to work with here) lets look at the top of the list
web design is searched daily 35,674 times and has 12,400,000 other webmasters going after that term which gives us a 6.178 KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) *this is good, generally speaking anything over 4.0 I can grab within a few months!
the #1 site has 1,470 IBL's (In Bound Links)
the #1 bid in AdWords is $2.75 #2 is $2.50 #3 is $2.00 and #4 is $1.91 PER CLICK!
This says a few things...
A.) with a KEI this high... I wouldn't go after the AdWords for two reasons... 1... I could probably get better organic rankings than I could afford to pay for at a min of $1.91 per click! 2... $1.91 per click is REDICLIOUS!!!
B.) If I wanted the BEST location for my ad I would bid $1.92 to take the 4th slot (remember MIT and Harvard both shared their research regarding the heat mapping studies, and slot #4 gets THE BEST CTR!)
C.) The people bidding on this are either large companies or people who like to throw away money
Make any sense yet? (sometimes I see everything soooo clearly in my head and have a hard time explaining it so that it makes any sense!)
Lets look at a good use of the remainder of the bluehost freebie AdWords credit
Forum... 5th down on the list...
This has 19,297 daily world searches.... and the 4th place bid is .10 which means that bidding .11 would (in theory, I can't predict what someone else is going to do in between the time you read this and the time you put it into action) get you 4th place ad's (which remember have the highest CTR)
Now the reason to choose this is simple as opposed to the top on the list this has a lower KEI (harder to obtain organic SERPS for) but has a MUCH lower CPC! you would get on average 17.36 more hits for the cost of 1 using the other term!
Now the idea, (and I haven't even started using trailing terms yet, but this is how you get the HUGE keyword lists) - the idea is to buy clicks low and get a HIGHER payout![]()
Hope this has made a bit of sense so far...
Now like I said before, I'm not an expert when it comes to this stuff... I've just been tutored by a brilliant man (Brian Mark) who is the CTO of www.Toolbarn.com and www.Toolpartsdirect.com
Here's where trailing terms come in... and I'll tell it to you the same way it was told to me-
If I were to bid on 'Cordless drills' w/ a CPC of $3.00+ I'd be stupid! Our company only carries a few brands of cordless drills... Do a bit of searching in AdWords and see what DeWalt 12v cordless drill would cost... (MUCH LOWER!) This has a two fold effect!
1.) Our advertising costs are MUCH LOWER!
2.) We already know that the person clicking the ad is looking for a DeWalt 12v Cordless drill (higher ROI - MUCH HIGHER ROI)
So if you can see from the illustration above how trailing terms could help your business... then my suggestion - Get to building a HUGE list! Another great thing to do is ask someone like your Mom or your Dad or an Aunt or Uncle that doesn't know much about the net... "How would you search for a widget?" Then take those search terms into consideration and see what the CPC is (LOW? HIGH?) then put it into action!
I like to concentrate on as many .03 - .05 cent key phrases as I can... This does not always mean that you'll get a HUGE amount of traffic from a .03 key phrase (but you WILL get a HUGE amount of traffic from 50 different .03 key Phrases!)
Now here's one last thing and then I'm going to wrap this up....
When your using AdWords to get traffic to your site... do you have AdSense running on your landing pages? If so, do they match your background hex color? and your text? Reason I ask is this....
We know that people that click on our ad's will do one of two things once they arrive at our site...
They will either (sign up, purchase, bookmark, etc...) OR they will click on one of your Ad's (because they didn't find what they were looking for!) We know that they Obviously click on ad's so what's better than a bunch of ad clickers on your site? A high CTR
Hope that helps some of you that get it if I've confused anyone, sorry feel free to tell me I'm crazy... :P
