Do you ever include flash on a landing page or do you fear even that could cause a distraction to the visitor, or have you found it works on some landing pages to keep them interested for those first few seconds?

Our clients use Flash on landing pages all the time!
It's a great way to increase conversions and improve visitor engagement.
It's important to keep the Flash very simple & streamlined though. Slow-loading Flash animation is a sure-fire way to lose the attention of your respondents.

Personally, if your flash is very short and load very fast. I will continue to stay to see your landing page.
But if your flash is loading very slowly, i would leave the site.
Flash can help keep visitors on you page longer but you must still have text content or your serps will go downhill!

depends what it is...
Some flash can be good for some sites.
I generally avoid flash completely for most sites, but especially on landing pages. Loading speed needs to be one of your primary concerns when it comes to a landing page, and even well optimized flash will load much more slowly than well coded css/html.
Don't get me wrong - Flash has it's place. I just think it's an overused tool.
Aslong as it doesnt take up the whole page its ok i think. Though even with small banners they can take ages to load sometimes, and not everyone has broadband.
I use flash a lot.. We do soe music sites and they want flash headers with animation. Its ok so long as it adds value. Sometime we use flash to build an app that users will use as well.. like searchin for movies in a zippy interface that lets you view the trailers as well..
If theres no need for it then i wouldnt bother.
If you use it for banners or click through then id keep it down to justr one flash banner per page, else youll drive people nuts!
Hi,
Interesting post and interesting comments. Here's my take...
Try both. Exactly the same copy, layout, etc but one has flash and the other doesn't. (In marketing terms this is known as a split test). Run the two landing pages simultaneously (you can use something like HyperTracker or simply have the same Google Adwords advert pointing to two different pages.) Make sure you've got conversion tracking switched on and then measure the results.

Hi,
Some very valid points above.
Just to add that Flash is just another means of delivering a message. What's critical is that the message is clear and that there is a strong call to action at the end of the flash.
You may also want to try testing video and audio with the same message: see which one works best.

I would have flash on the landing page, but keep it so that if it doesn't load, it doesn't effect your landing page.
