    Default WordPress Plugin Talk

I would really like to hear what WP plugins you really like and even which ones you do not. There are a lot of different plugins available for WP, which really extends how you can present and manipulate your blog. In particular I would really like to hear from those of you who have used certain plugins long enough to know how they perform.

What plugins you choose depends upon what you want to do with your blog. I have some blogs with only 3 or 4 plugins while others may have as many as 12.

One of my favorite plugins is the WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.2 Release With this doing the regular upgrades is really quick and easy. No more downloading, extracting and uploading files when WP releases a new version. Everything is done from within your admin by clicking and follwoing prompts. I have been using this one through the past 4 or 5 WP updates and have never had a single problem or glitch.

What WP plugins have you used and liked so much that you would recommend them to others? Which ones did you think weren't worth using?

Can you tell us what it is about the Platinum SEO that makes it better than all in one SEP or other similar plugins?

Well, I had tried a couple of other seo plugins, but was a bit bamboozled by them all, then allout recommended that I try Platinum SEO, and it was so much easier and simpler to use. You can just tick the options you want, and most options have a brief description about what each feature does which was helpful.

It is basically the same Pluign but has some added features. The coolest one is that if you change your permalinks, it will automatically redirect the old ones without any modifications.

Here is the information I wrote about it when I first loaded it:

    yourreview.net/platinum-seo-pack-review/

These are all the ones I use and like:

    AddThis Social Bookmarking Widget (drop-down)

    AdSense Manager

    commentluv

    FeedBurner FeedSmith

    NoFollow Free

    Platinum SEO Pack

    Subscribe To Comments

    Viper's Video Quicktags

    WP-Sticky

I also use the Auto Update on one blog but the rest are loaded with Fantistco so I can update those through there.
I have tried hundreds but these have worked well and are all easy to use. :sgrin:

The three I upload first are feedsnap and Smart Youtube and Obsocialbookmarker. Then depending on the blog I have a few others that I upload.

I am fairly sure that WP does this on its own. You change a permalink and it will automatically redirect the old one.

It also has these functions built in - Subscribe To Comments and make a post Sticky

Nope, when you change permalinks, WP changes them all but does not redirect the old URL to the new one.

You can subscribe to all comments but not a individual comment directly from WP. The plug in add a spot to be notified of follow up comments.

As far as the sticky, I never found that in the base WP. Is that new in 2.7?

At the bottom of every post in my blogs there is a link that says "Subscribe to this comment feed via RSS"

When you create a new post and click the "visibility" option you can check a box for "Stick this post to the front page" In quick edit the options says "Make this post sticky"

What version are you using? I do not see that for sticky.

As far as the comments it is for email follow ups not RSS feed:

"Notify me of followup comments via e-mail"

It must be a matter of the theme somewhat because on the hillbilly blog it is an RSS feed not an email feed while on another blog I just checked there is no link for a feed there at all.

I am using WP 2.7 and the sticky option is in all of my blog admins. One quick place to check is go to "edit posts" and then click "quick edit" on one of them. Just above the "update post" button you should see a tick mark box for "Make this post sticky"

I did not upgrade to 2.7 yet. It must be new for that.

Here's a few plugins I use; I also use the All In One SEO Pack to be honest I've been using it for so long I forget exactly why I use it. :sundecided:
One thing of note, Kentucky 2.7 now has an auto-upgrade feature for both WP and plugs so that you don't need the upgrade plugin.

    On to hacks:

Bad Behavior: Stops a lot of the bots from even accessing the site, my Akismet spam numbers have dropped way down since installing this.

Contact Form 7: I use it for my contact me pages, it's much more extensible than that but I use it for the basics

Subscribe2: People can subscribe via email to either all posts or just specific categories. I suppose the same could be done with FeedBurner but I prefer to keep everything 'in-house' and not pass my user data along to 3rd parties.

Subscribe to Comments: Pretty basic but I use it on all my blogs, I actually cannot stand blogs that don't have this plugin, it makes me think twice about commenting on them.

That's about it, I used to run Counterize plugin for inhouse stats however it hasn't been updated in quit a while still looking for a replacment for that.

Hey Dan, I never realized or even noticed that. Glad to know it though because I like to limit the plugins I use as much as I can to avoid redundancy. I always kept the update plugin uninstalled until I needed it but now it looks like I can get rid of it altogether.

I am surprised that WP hasnt added a built in contact form yet, but I bet it wont be long

I'm sure they will implement a comment form sooner or later personally I'd like to see more SEO options included by default but I guess not every blogger is a wanna SEO wizard.

Subscribe to comments should be the first plugin anyone installs, at least in my opinion. Any plugin that starts bringing visitors BACK, should be on your priority list. Also, All-In-One-SEO is one I've used in the past as well.

There is no need if you have the most current version of WP. Here is what ole Big Dan said above (Which I myself was not aware of before):

    You can download it at:

WordPress › All in One SEO Pack « WordPress Plugins OR

WordPress › Platinum SEO Pack « WordPress Plugins

if you have WP 2.7 you can go to your plugins page --> add new and then do a search for an SEO plugin there.
