With regards to promoting my main blog iamned.com I have found that search engine traffic is sketchy at best and I got hit by a random penalty a year back, which I never recovered. It was so bad that my bog didn;t even come up when you typed in its name, but now it does.
Regarding promotion, I found the only way to get steady, consistent traffic was to essentially spam other people's blogs on topics similar to mine through deceptive means. You have to have thick skin cause you will get flamed and and banned. So I used proxies, too. And redirects to get the links to stay incase the URL was blocked. PPL flamed my blog, but I kept repeating it though and it became a battle of attrition. After spamming 15 or so high traffic blogs for a couple months I was finally able to get steady traffic without as much promotion, but I pissed off a lot of people including a high profile wallstreet analyst.
So this went on for many months until the stock market finally crashed in late october and I quit.
So there you go. That's one account of how I got traffic to my blog though unsavory means. If you don't mind pissing people off it works wonders.
The problem is there is too much content on the internet, but not enough carbon based life to read it all. Sometimes you got to force it down peoples throats when all else fails.
