What are the benefits of free blogs, other than it being free?
Can anyone enlighten me?

Sometimes hosted (free) blogs will SEO better initially but other than that, I don't see any real benefit other than being free.

A free blog means you can experiment and try out new ideas with no start up costs. If a free blog works out you can always buy a custom domain later. I cant imagine there would be any difference SEO wise, either positive or negative.

well it get ranked quickly by search engines.Search engines love blog and secondly they usually get more traffic

With free blogs, you can create as many blogs as you like without worrying on the cost for as long as each blog are intended for legitimate purposes.. You can get exposure similar to paid blogs.. So basically, it all boils down to the benefit of it being free..

From it words itself. BTW we have the same opinion of miccharlys. Having a free blogs is easy to access. And it's up to you to handled it.

Having a free blog has lots of advantages and monetizing it is quite easy.
You can easily set up a free blog at blogger, freely add Google Adsense to it, then freely add affiliate links and banners from good affiliate networks like Clickbank, CJ, etc and freely do some SEO to get traffic.
All these without paying a dime and therefore not being afraid of losing.

In my opinion free blogs are OK for those who are starting out or for just playing around with but anyone who is serious should have their own domain and hosting.

blogs have various things. you can earn money, you can promote items, you can keep in touch with certain business group etc.

Free blogs like blogger and wordpress.com are also helpful in giving backlink to your main site.

Free blogs let you explore and play around with your own site without going through the hassle of setting up a site from scratch and worrying about the web hosting fees. Moreover, they can be monetized, so imagine earning from it without even investing a single cent.

that's true, aside from that it is a great way to established and create your own site for promotion if you can't afford to paid to some paid advertisement.

I agree with riderbabygurl and KentuckySlone mention above. As a newbie I also start joining free blogs. And I find it easy to handled since it was easy to use I tried exploring it and making some tips over the net.

Blogs are agreat way to develop your ideas and new content. If you just keep writing stuff, before you know it you'll have enough for a book. So, even if you don't make much money via Adsense or affiliate programs, it's still useful to blog.

Also, if you start several free blogs and get PR of 2 or 3 for them, which isn't that hard, you can use them to promote a new site by linking to it from them. This will get indexed quicker as a result and definitely improve the site's rankings.

They are great as an add on to your site you can talk about your niche an let your visitors know what new things they should expect on your website. They are also great as a stand alone web presence easy to build, start, and use with the ability to have just as much presence and PR as any website. Personally I have 8 or so free blogs some used for links others I keep up to date with info many diffrent uses plus they are just a lot of fun.

Free blogs in my opinion are best suited for developing links back to your own self-hosted blog. If you are really going to develop a blog, self hosted allows you to have control over EVERY aspect of your website. Free blogs have the right to change their terms of use and/or discontinue the blog (or the free part) at any time. So build your presence on something YOU own, not the blog software or website company.

The advantages of a free blog, especially at LARGE blog networks like Wordpress.com is that the SE spiders love them and hang out there a lot! So by getting a free blog like one at Wordpress.com, you can have quick access to search engine rankings. If you use the free blog to write summaries of your posts on your own self-hosted blog, and then link back to that post "for the rest of the story" you can not only bring the SE's to your personal blog, but could also end up with 2 SERPs entries!

Do you really make money from blogs using adsense? How much money? and how long does it take to get started?

The most benefit of a free blog is that you needn't pay for it.What's more,they are generally easy to manage and have similar style.This could be the weakness because
it can't make yours distint with others from the style.In addtion,a free one may not have enough technical support.You'd better think about this.

How much traffic do you get just from being on blogspot.com for instance? Also how dose it affect SEO? Dose google like/dislike blogspot.com or wordpress.com blogs more or less then blogs hosted on there own? I guess what I am asking is will a new startup blog on a blogger network grow faster then the same blog with the same amount of promotion standing on its own merit? Any thoughts on this?

IMO, there are only two powerful blogging platforms - Blogspot & Wordpress. The only benefit of these free blogs are that you can create free blog without any investment. But, you can't get the features and full control that you get on self hosted blogs. Templates are limited on the free blog platforms whereas on self hosted blogs you can customize your own templates and upload them. Also, when your website traffic increases you are able to upgrade your hosting needs as per your requirement. And the main thing is the support you get from the hosting companies.

You are always welcome, blue. The real benefit of hosting your own blog is that you get a complete freedom to do whatever you want to do with your blog anytime.

As always the saying says "the best thing in life is free" and free blogs is a good way to build links and reputation for your newly introduced brand or website. In such a way, your initial capital for starting marketing campaigns will be zero.

It is beneficial only to get a feel of blogging.It is good if you wish to run a personal blog and are not very serious about it.
With free blog you don't have to worry about hosting issues such as downtime and backups.

The real benefit of blogs is creating money through visitors on your blog.

Benefit I guess is you do not pay for something you love doing. Besides that you also have the opportunity to lie low when you doesnt like the blog anymore you can just delete it or perhaps you can even leave it is such without guilty feeling
