    Question Couple of Vista's questions

    Hey guys,

So you all know I got my new computer now I got a couple of questions for the experts. Just so you know it took me under 30 hours to get my first blue screen of death.

One is a three part question:

    Is Vista's firewall two way?
If so, is it sufficient or am I better off with a third party app?
If I need a 3rd party firewall can you recommend a good free one? I tried installing Zone Alarm free for Vista and got a BSD, forcing a reboot then I couldn't login without getting BSD.. So, I had to roll back to a restore point. A little Googleing shows there is a known issue with ZA + Vista on certain computers.

What are you all using for FTP app on Vista?

and lastly What's a good place to find Windows Gadgets for the sidebar, the windows site didn't have anything great.

    Thanks for your expertise.

    1. Vista's firewall bi-directional? Don't know. But, there's UAC (User Account Control) which basically makes you confirm every move you make, including breathing, moving the mouse, etc.

    2. I am using only the Vista firewall, but I am very careful about what I download and run on my system and I am behind a hardware firewall.

    3. I installed WS_FTP without a hitch. It's working great and I was surprised because it is an old version. And by old, I mean I think George Washington was using this version to FTP his inaugural speech to his assistant for corrections. :stongue:

    4. Sidebar gadgets. This is a good place to start.
And here's information on how to convert Google Desktop gadgets into Vista Sidebar gadgets.

i would scrap vista and go back to XP. Vista takes up to much resources and your computer will be a lot faster on XP.

and for ftp i think you can use cute FTP for vista as well.

I would dual boot your vista with XP, only keeping a small drive with vista for any DriectX10 games you may want to try, otherwise Vista is pretty suck.

If you plan to dual boot you install XP then do a quick search, cannot remember if you actually want to install XP first then Vista, or Vista then XP, could be the second. VIsta will mess with your boot file so it does make a difference.

I'm not using Vista but I have read somewhere that the built-in firewall is two-way, but can't confirm at this time.

About the FTP try Filezilla Server, again don't know if it work on Vista.

Angry Here's a big question for yous

    Is Vista freaking kidding me:

^That's me expanding a 1.1 MB Wordpress ZIP... That's slower than my dead grandmother!

Nothing else was running, my stats program showed 30% RAM utilization and both cores were pretty much unused.

Nope it was still plugging along, long after I uploaded that picture and posted.

I fixed it though, downloaded 7 Zip. Leave it to FOSS to fix commercial software's short comings. 7-Zip unpacked it in less than a second.

I have Vista on my computer, the only reason for it is that it was preinstalled and I'm to lazy to downgrade to XP and it's really late now, I have almost filled up my entire hard drive.

Anyone want to buy me a Mac?
