    Default So I have vista...

    Windows vista ultimate that is.

...and if I leave my computer for so long it turns off into standby mode to save power. When I come back to it and turn it back on again 3/5 times it will come up with an error or more than one, and i'm not sure why. Usually the errors are one of two things, either windows explorer has stopped working and has to restart or theres another one (can't remember it's name at the moment, but it sounds like it's sending information back to microsoft about something) that just ends and seems not to have any effect on the system.

But yesterday I turned it back on and the windows explorer thing came up, and kept coming up until I shut down the computer and turned it back on again, was a bit annoying. I was just wondering if anyone else has had/having the same problems? If they can be fixed then that would be great, if not it's not much of a hassle having to restart the computer if it does this, or just prevent it from going into standby.

    Thanks,
    TS

It's not that great...bit gimmicky I supose with it looking quite sexy and all.

I'd have stuck with XP but after my new computer came with 4GB of RAM I thought it'd be a waste not to use it (XP only copes with 2GB maximum I believe)

My personal experiment with vista is fairly bad:
-Blue screens of death several times.
    -Uncompatibility of hardware components.
-And much much more little problems like yours.
I really reccommend to you that you uninstall vista and instal a Windows XP.
Then you can download pretty worthful themes and cursors and all kind of mods from the net. These little gadgets makes you feel that you have vista but actually a more stable system:Windows XP.

But then I can't use my computer to it's full capacity...which would defeat my point of getting one with more than 2Gb of RAM.

I've had the blue screen a few times, always with the same situation though (when it comes back from standby). It's always fine unless it goes into standby.

I'm sure the problems will get fixed in time. I havn't had any software compatibility issues, only one with hardware (my really old printer won't work...not surprising really).

I find it is no better than XP at this point, but I am using it on a regular basis and don't really have any major problems either.

Well pardon me but I don't really understand what can Windows Vista offer that Xp cannot.Probably the probem is with me but when I had Vista I could not see any benefit in it.
I don't understand why can't you use your computer at full capacity on XP really.

I use Vista and I really like it.

On your specific issue, try sleep mode instead of standby and see if it's any better for you.
Don't use hibernate, as that has more potential for problems.
If sleep mode brings you no joy, turn all the power saving features off, except for the screen saver.

Cause XP caps the RAM use at 2Gb...so the remaining 2Gb on my new computer would be useless to have. When XP was made they didn't expect anyone would use more than 2Gb of RAM till they brought out a new OS, which just wasn't correct. Well as far as I know this is true.

Here's a good article on RAM:

Reader Question: Maximum Memory in 32-bit Windows Vista - Windows Vista help

I don't see the need for much more than 2 GB on a standard desktop. Today is the first time in the week that I've had my new computer (w/ 3 GB of RAM), I've gone over the 50% mark in RAM. I'm currently at 55% and I'm rendering an hour and a half DVD and have 40 + Firefox tabs open. My processor is maxed out due to the encoding but I'm sitting at just 55% of available RAM used.

I have 3 GB installed but only have a little over 2 and 3/4 GB available to use due to the video card eating up some system RAM.

If I ever start to use up all my RAM I'll install 64 Bit Vista and max myself out to 16 GB. I just cannot see the average web developer even with FrontPage, Photoshop, and multipule browser windows open using over 4 GB.

    Destroy your computer now!
The only reason I'm still using Vista (note the 'still', it feels like forever) is because I can't afford a Mac! :dazzler:
Vista was being horrible to me from the start, asking me to allow every action the computer does, so.. I then disable UAD. Now, there is absolutely no protection, so I install a firewall, which was a pain in the but because the one I love using wasn't yet available for Vista, so I had to hack it and force it to work.
Then.... I install some programs, la dee da, no problem. But as soon as I start up Virtual DJ and put some tunes in to fool around mixing. BAM! Blue screen of death. Restart computer, which takes forever and here it goes all over again.

<-- donate for my mac LOL

Vista's alright - for some people it's practically flawless, but to many (including myself) there are a couple of bugs that I wouldn't mind being hammered out. Then again, my motherboard isn't the best, so that may be the problem. Anyway, XP is enough for me.

This mainly happen because of vista drivers. it is a new Operating System, and some drivers are still buggy especially on Vista 64 bit

I just started having issues a few days ago. My screen would do this weird line and color and stop working thing everytime I used Window's Media Player. Then it would restart the computer. Pissed me the hell off. I started using Real Player and I haven't had problems yet. I really hope it's an easy fix of just not using WMP

I've had Vista on this laptop for a couple months now. I honestly don't see it any better than XP, in fact I see it as worse.

    Safety Features:
    - the "Do you REALLY want to do this?" feature...so bloody annoying that I turned it off
    - the "by default YOU are not the admin is...the SYSTEM is" feature...again bloody annoying that I made everything run as admin

    Drivers:
    - way less drivers than with XP
    - NO IPX...no old game networking ~_~ You can't even add it back in

A lot of quirks with the superfetching and prefetching that I have to run some programs right when the system boots up else I'll never get them running.

I don't have a copy of XP for this laptop, else I might switch back. I've also been waiting to see if any more hotfixes or even service packs come out for Vista (and yes, I know SP1 is already out).

    I have Home Premium btw.

I've dual booted my PC just because of the IPX thing...

I've not had many problems with drivers so far, my printer didn't work, it was too old and I needed a new one anyway, my webcam won't work either, but it was cheap and a new one would be nice too. Everything else works perfectly fine.

I agree with the security things, i've sorted that now though, pretty simple to sort, making me admin and that.

They will sort things in time, SP2 should be out in the forseeable future.

I'm disappointed about the plug and play support though, well, the HID to be exact. I have a USB gamepad that is basically a PS2 controller. However, the times I've tried it out on Vista...the OS bloody thinks it has a Z-axis. I mean, really, OMGWTF. ~_~

I can't use the gamepad at all because of it and will likely have to buy a new one that is 'rated' for Vista. If it works I might pick up another one or two so when I have friends over we can use them on my emulators xD.

is that really true max only 2GB? i doubt so

anyway im still happy with my xp. runs flawless for many years already

I got Vista with my Dell computer which I purchased about 8 months ago. It`s the basic version. I wouldn`t say it`s great, not all it was hyped up to be at any rate.

As for the browser I use - 99% of the time - Firefox, just don`t like IE much.

i just tuned off all the "special" vista features. i don't need a carousel to select which window i want to go to. i don't need 73.87% transparency in my taskbar. it now looks like 98. but then, so does my xp.

the only useful feature in vista: the search built into the start menu.

I hate Vista at this time, it is really a crappy OS. The free OS like Linux is better that it I think.

    Thanks,
    TS
I was having that problem until I updated the SP and disabled the sleep mode.
