Thread: My computer is scaring me

It is making a noise! :sshocked::scry:

Any ideas what may cause it? Is it going to blow up :sangry:

I might add that it is normally silent and suddenly it started getting noisy. I haven't taken the cover off yet (mainly because I can't undo the screws). It first made this noise a few days ago and it scared me so I turned it off at the powerpoint and the noise had stopped after I tried it again. That didn't work today :scry:

Your fan is probably covered in dust, I just remove the case and clean it out, but you said you can't so....

It seems to have quietened down for now, so I'll relax again for a bit.

More than likely a fan, could also be a cd drive or hard drive.

My old computer sounded like a jet fighter taking off as soon I started open multiple Firefox tabs. The fan blades are caked with so much dust and cigarette smoke that I cannot clean them. :eek:

With my new computer, I made a rule no smoking around the computer.. I kept it for 4 days.. Hopefully I quit smoking tomorrow and no damage will be done. I really gotta quit, been saying it for years.

I have a computer here that is perpetually noisy.
Every six months or so, it gets so bad, I have to take the CPU fan off the board and clean the fins with an old toothbrush.
The dust collects and the system gets noisier until it shuts down because of the heat.
Noise > Heat > Shutdown > Toothbrush > Repeat

Whether one hears a noise or not, it is best to clean the innards once a month.
Even with the CPU up on the desk and far away from the carpeted floor, it still picks up enough dirt and smoke and lint and whatever else is floating in the air.

Honey is Horney....hint on the smoking part...get a fan and have it set so that cig smoke is drawn off to a window.

We have ceilling fans going 12/12 here because of the warmth so maybe that has kept the smoke from mine. Can't say that the innards of mine have been cleaned in two years :sblush: My previous one was never cleaned in the six years I was using it. (it still works fine and is there for any emergency).

Possible causes:

1. Accumulated dust in the fan blades and the processor heat sink can make the fan produce unnatural noise.. if its the fan that's doing that, its could be an indication that the processor fan is not working efficiently and may lead to severe damage to your computer..

2. Some loose wire or cable might be "hitting" a fan.. ( I encountered this before ).. It could be the processor fan or the case cooling fan.. Check for loose wires or cables near those fans.

3. Unusual clicks or ticking sounds ? It could be your hard drive filing a resignation letter. ..

4. Graphic cards / Video cards with cooling fan could also be the culprit.. Intensive graphic needs of an application (especially games) requires the fan to "spin" more or "rev-up" ... hence the noise.. Accumulated fan dust and loose wire / cable interfering with the fan blades should also be checked.

5. None of the above ?! Could be your power supply making the unusual noise.

Better let a computer technician check it out for you..

To ward off any and all evil spirits...

May be the problem is with HDD. YOu need to identify it. Run scan disk and check whether you have any bad sectors in HDD.

We get a LOT of dust here in Vegas. My husband cleans our electronic equipment about once a month which is really needed. When I see the dust that comes from my computer, I'm horrified. :2026:
