Thread: I've got it again...the upgrade itch....

I've got that hankering to upgrade the ol desktop again.

I was thinking about going to a WD Raptor 10K RPM HDD instead of the 7200 I have now...much of a difference you think? (both SATA)

and/OR

I was also toying with the idea of buying a matched pair of DDR2's and see if I can get the advertised 800MHZ on the clock speed for the RAM...right now I have 3-1GB modules, 400, 333x2 MHZ

Thoughts?

They have 15K drives now. If you can afford it, do it.
They also have solid state drives (no moving parts - they work like USB memory) which will be faster than any drive on the market.
The solid state drives come in sizes up to 8 GB.
That's not enough for your data, obviously, but it is enough for the operating system and your programs.
Put the O/S on the solid state and the data on a 10K or 15K drive and your system will be smokin'!

I just checked the Canadian TigerDirect website and we can get the solid state drives in sizes up to 32 GB!

You guys can only get up to 8 GB.

the 15K is like $400+, 10k < 200

those SSD's are a trip, maybe i should just wait on those to develop....my c drive is bloated, no way i could fit everything on 8g

as far as the DDR's, found a stupid good price might run out for those in a couple hours.

I NEED 3GB but obviously a matched pair is 2...what happens when I plug one of my old 1GB into the 3rd slot? does the matched pair have to run @ the 3rd's speed? it must right?

so then I'd really need 2 matched pairs?

yeah the one I have now is like 1.0 steps above the stock one, the stock one you know is like 4 empty gum wrappers stapled together

IMO set this system up as a backup and build a new one

Use it to dump off your files on, etc.

while that would be easier, and make more "sense" - I wouldn't be able to "massage" the books enough in order to get a new system.

yeah, I was scoping out some of those

the fan is lame though, I need like 5K rpm....loud as a hair dryer on high!!!



so far so good on the mem, I DO notice a difference or my brain tells me that it does in order to justify the cost

for instance MS Outlook opens in < 0.33 seconds, before it was 1.2 secs at least

I got a "FRYS????" from the mrs today mg:

4GB (2 matched pairs) = installed
New CPU heat sink = installed
3 old Thermaltake 4800RPM case fans = installed
Raptor 10K RPM = here on Monday


the matched RAM's didn't do me any favors with the OC'ing though, that kind of surprised me. It still BSOD'd @ 215 FSB. It still likes 211 though...212 is looming, I bet any higher and I'd have top tweak the CPU voltage mg:





an interesting tidbit...in an effort to declutter my HDD...which was like 140GB! I found that in my c:\doc&settings\user\local settings\application data\ACDSEE Systems

(ACDSEE an image catalogger/editor)

where there was a folder called RIPcache taking up like 70GB of space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It must be part of the image DB...regardless that is way to friggin huge! I'd rather uninstall the program than have it take up that much freaking space!!!

Check out that program's options menu maybe you can tweak the cache settings.

I sorta did that but didn't see anything on the surface that would indicate a setting of that sort. I just blew it away, program probably won't run now

...or, it will run and it will just begin recreating that mammoth database as you access your images again.
