Question Desktop to Laptop File Sync ideas?

    Hi Folks,

Well I have my new desktop and laptop all spiffied up. I've copied all my files over to the laptop now I need a program just to keep them updated between each other. I do have my computers behind the same router and in the same workgroup so they can talk to each other but I transfer files then shut it right off as I'm always worried about someone else getting on my network and viewing my shared folders.

I'm looking for an idiot proof application to sync specified folders between the two computers and not throw errors if one or the other isn't available on the network. While I'm here is there any way share folders just between two computers and not have all shared folders wide open to anyone on the network?

I just purchased two Roboform licenses and see the folks over there have a program called GoodSync which looks to do exactly what I want and judging on the quality of Roboform, GoodSync will probably be awesome. But I'd like something easier on the wallet, preferably free for now. Any ideas guys?

    Thanks,
    Dan

You can try Syncback. They have a free version. It's not sophisticated at all.
It's just a straight DOS file copy, but you can schedule it, run it manually, zip the contents and/or FTP the files somewhere.
The price is right. And, they have a paid version which probably does more.

As for shared folders, you can hide any share if you add a $ to the end of it.
It's still as accessible as a non-hidden share, but it won't show up in "My Network Places" or "Network Neighborhood", depending on your Windows version.
You can also specify user names and passwords to access the share by using file system permissions on your shared folder.
