Thread: Hitachi 5TB 3.5" Hard Drive Is Coming

Hitachi has pledged to release a 5TB 3.5in hard drive within two years, and it claims two of the drives will boast enough capacity to store everything in your brain.

According to a report by Nikkei Net, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies will use Current-Perpendicular-to-Plane Giant Magnetoresistance (CPP-GMR) magnetc read heads to achieve the aim. This, the firm claims, will allow its drives to store 1TB of data in every square inch of the recording surface.

Hitachi’s announcement is a step on from a claim it made back in October 2007 that 4TB of storage could become a reality by 2011.

Wonder what the price will be? (By 2010, we'll need a drive that size just to run Windows )

One thing that scares me.

As drives get bigger and bigger, hosting companies jam more and more sites onto one server.

I'd be more likely to want one for home to store my recorded tv shows and such. I expect they'll initially be pretty pricey!

5 tb is a huge space . but you dont have to get scared we wont use it in one server haha

Personally, I'd like to see this ancient technology done away with and more development $$$$ put into solid state drives.
A 5 TB drive with platters and R/W heads mounted on moveable arms is still susceptible to mechanical failure.
When it fails, it just means you lose more stuff.

In 2010 things will advance so much we will probably think 5 tb is nothing.

Remember when 250 gig was big? Thats standard on most laptops at Best Buy now.

don't be so sure.. we may someday have native support for a gesture interface, voice recognition, and 3D rendering in Windows.. Windows used to come on floppies.. someday we'll have to truck it in.

We wont have to truck it in as technology is becoming more compact.

And windows itself isnt getting bigger, its the amount of programs and the size of those.

The base install of Windows is MUCH bigger than it used to be.
More advanced programs = more space being taken up.

Hm, true Grim. But still will never take up 5 tb just by itself.(Unless standard pcs come with like 100 tb hd then)

Ok, 1TB is something I can afford and it will be 100% useful to me. Coz the number of movies and songs and software's I download...
Well, I think I'll be buying the 1tb USB External HD.

But 5Tb..? Isn't it a bit too much of space..
