    Question Sync solution?

    Hi again folks,

I have yet another computer question..This time I want to sync folders between my laptop and desktop. Basically I'm tired of throwing files on a flash drive to transfer in between.

Ideally what I'd like is to sync my entire C:\Users\Dan folder this way any changes to desktop shortcuts, programs, etc will be synced. Obviously that folder contains a lot of information so the program would have to be "smart" enough to see what files have changed and what hasn't so only the updated files will be synced.

A nice feature would be auto sync but not have it throw errors if one of the computers aren't turned on.

On thing that I really need is for the program to be smart enough to only accept syncs from each computer and block access to other computers.

One solution would be to use a data integration tool.

For example, you could use Talend Open Studio, which is an open source data integration tool. And since data integration encompasses data synchronization, you can, of course, do what you're describing above with T.O.S.

What's more, as I said before this is an open source tool, which means, among others, you don't have to pay for the licence.

You can have a look at the users manual right here : User manuals
    which is quite comprehensive

And you have some tutorials here : Talend Open Studio - Tutorials

Since it is a user-friendly tool, I think you can manage on your own but don't hesitate if you have questions.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet. It looks a bit involved for my purposes but I'm going to research it further.

Yes it is capable of doing many more things that what you described above but you know the old saying : he who can do more can do less.

Besides, if you need to do etl-related work (database work for instance), you will already be familiar with the tool. But I understand that at first it seems that you're using a caterpillar to dig up a worm... but who knows you may want to dig up more than a worm someday and then you'll be happy to know how to use a cat' ;-)
