My friend just bough a acer for $530 (already including tax)....its like 160 gig hd and 2 gig ram...meh, not had but 160 gig is small these days

The only reason that would be considered small is cause of all those downloading large files, like movies, music, etc. Or storing pictures from their digital cameras. A lot of us don't download and/or store such things and actually have different uses for our computers.
I have a lot less than 160 gigs and it's absolutely fine for me. I don't use a fraction of it and neither does our other main desktop computer.
I've had Acer's in the past and have had no problem at all with the, they ran pretty smooth. If you can get a good deal on one then it is definitely worth it.
We currently have an Acer laptop (my wife's puter), and it's been great for us. Had it about 2 yrs.

Grim I've had an Acer laptop since March, the 5920 series and have been really impressed with it. I don't have much to compare it to the only other laptop I've used longer than a couple of hours is my sister's Compaq M2000. This is the exact system I have: Walmart.com: Acer 15.4" Aspire 5920-6864 Laptop PC w/ Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 Processor: Computers
It's an awesome little notebook. My only beef is the HD is only 5400 RPMs, which is standard for notebooks but it does noticeably slow the system down during large file moves and OS installs. Battery life is about 3 Hours with Vista using the High Performance Power profile. I've gotten about 4 hours out of a full charge when running Ubuntu doing the same thing I do under Windows.![]()
Other than that you'll want to uninstall all the Acer branded crap, eNet Manager and ePower Manager among a few others. They eat RAM like there is no tomorrow, once you uninstall them and reboot from login to useable desktop time is just about cut in half. I think there's a master program called "Acer Empowering Technology" that will uninstall them all at once if you try uninstalling it via the add/remove programs box. The windows wireless network and power schemes do a great job of handling that stuff without the extra over head.
Oh and before I forget the wireless card in mine is awesome it detects like 4 or 5 networks in my little town here that my sister's laptop never detected.
Good luck with it if you get it..It's a refurb though, I'd give their support and return policy another look.
PS: The Intel Graphics have a bit to be desired but for normal webmaster/server admin stuff and the occasional movie or photo edit it's fine.

WOW...few supporters for Acer ...
I heard some horrible stories earlier ....may be some problem with an old model...
i've 5290 - perfect machine but it's a bit heavy ;(
