When's the funeral?

Sorry to hearHope you had recent backups.

It was a Dell, wasn't it?
I've not been impressed with Dell ever since I heard about their exploding batteries.
The battery issue was not just dell it was many places who bought the batteries from a supplier.
Yeah it's a dell, a refurb. It's not totally dead but wont boot to windows.
Nope no backups, was still getting it going.

Didn't you have some hardware issues when you first got it too? Had to get it replaced or whatever?
A nice big Viao is what you need.
You could have probably restored it.
Ubuntu live disc works wonders.
Whenever my pc dies, I can't boot windows, it bluescreens me beforehand.
What I started doing was when my pc would die, i would boot ubuntu, force mount the HDD, and then shut down. it worked and restored my pc with a chkdsk when i rebooted.![]()
That's exactly what you do grim.
Then you have to look up a guide on how to force mount a hard drive.
Everytime I have to do it, I lose my guide, and have to find another one.
Let me know if you need help finding it.
I've force mounted the drive, still no load into windows.
'but' I can now backup the data to my USB drive!
That's worth it right there.
Thanks for the tip.
Grim, once your drive is force mounted, shut down properly from ubuntu.
ONce you turn your pc on, it should launch into CHKDSK and fix your hard drive.
If not, look up a guide on chkdsking from ubuntu.
My girlfriend was going to kill me when I accidentally killed my HDD and lost 6gigs of original pics.
I spent weeks trying to find a solution.![]()
doesn't launch into it on startup, tries to load to windows
And it still fails grimbo?
Maybe you really messed it up. :P
Maybe there's another hotkey to initiate chkdsk?
And like I said, try it in ubuntu?
did some research, no chkdsk in ubuntu
fsck isall I could find

Grim,
You can download the Vista Rescue CD and try running repair install from there or use check disk from the CLI.![]()

I'm a day late and a dollar short, Sorry Grim. Good luck with the reinstall.![]()

Have you bought the new Acer ?
Nope did not buy it.
Got vista installed, running, now the fun of trying to get my settings and programs back up and running,.
Having huge issues getting windows mail to get my emails transferred over! I hope I did not lose them all!![]()

tisk tisk With Thunderbird you backup one folder with all your emails and settings and then drop it back into place to restore everything. I do it all the time, you should give it a test run, plus lots of neat extensions to add functionality like a Calendar and stuffs.s
I tried thunderbird.
Drove me nuts. D;
I've conformed and recently moved over to gmail now that I have 5 email accounts going. D;
I actually have thunderbird installed, I've had issues with it in the past plus it's lacking some basics.
