Default Gmail opening a new blank tab in FF

I installed AIM the other day, the messenger, I don't know if it caused this but right after that anytime I view Gmail in my Firefox 3.0.1 browser, it pops open a tab with a blank white page alongside it.

I allowed AIM to install it's toolbar but then disabled the toolbar, I am almost positive it caused this but any ideas how to fix it? It's very annoying.

    Try

    1. Enabling the toolbar. See what you get.
    2. Removing just the toolbar in add/remove if possible.
    3. Removing AIM.

AIM is a dirty little misbehaving program.. [mental]Bad Program Bad![/mental]

hehe, in all seriousness I only connect to AIM via Pidgin.

For the most part when external programs install FF extensions lots of them place the extension in the firefox program directory rather than the FF user profile directory. Thus you cannot remove them, only disable them. If you go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions you should be able to find the extension folder and just delete it.

I tried the first 2 and rebooted and it's still happening. I guess removing AIM would be useless as I use it and would install it again, so if it's causing it I just have to put up with it.

Dan, I looked in the extensions folder and don't see anything for AIM/AOL there, so I guess it all got removed. Maybe I should just reinstall Firefox?

You should first trash your firefox profile folder which holders all your extensions and stuff.. C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming and delete the Mozilla folder then reinstall Firefox.

That path is for Vista on XP is' similar replace \users\ with \Documents and Settings\ make sure you have show hidden files and folders on in Windows Explorer.

The reason for deleting your FF profile is that's what holds all your data, bookmarks, and extensions. When you reinstall it would automatically use that profile again, thus probably creating the same problem.

Alternatively you could use Firefox's profile mananger to build a new profile and see if htat fixes the issue just Start > Run > firefox.exe -profilemanager

Why would something like this happen? Could it have something to do with the fact that the gmail messenger will allow you to connect to your AIM list-could that cause a clash?
