    Default Windows Vista Update Nightmare

Notebook went down again today, windows update after reboot would go to phase 3, then continually reboot in a never ending cycle.

I tried pretty much everything, restore points, repair, safe mode, and a few others.

Finally I had to open a console session from the repair mode, using notepad I deleted the file that controls windows update on reboot, renamed it .old before as well..

It worked, but what a nightmare. Can't believe windows doesn't have something built in to stop crap like this from happening.

Way to cramp your style too! I just got a lappy today Dell's 1525! So far I love it! No crashes yet thank goodness!

I guess your best bet is a reinstall... do you have anything important on the lap top?

P.S I'm still on my desktop I simply swear by it! The lap top sits beside me! I'm running the Dell XPS600 Have been for 4 years now! 3.2gig 5 gigs ddr2 512 vid SLI running 2 vid cards it's simply awesome still to this day and It's 4 years old! Vista as well as the OS like the lap top! The xps600 was 32 and 64 bit processor system which allow me to actually use the 5 gigs ddr2

Looks like a really nice laptop Grim. Want to trade for a Compaq M2000? FWIW, I've never had an issues with updates on Vista other than them taking a long time to install.

I have Vista on my Compaq Laptop and on my Dell Desktop and I have not had anything like what you described. I had my Laptop for a year now and no problems at all. I did get a weird update on my Desk Top that changed some icon settings but nothing that caused loading problems.

Sounds like something is corrupted and as bbrian stated, you may have to reload.

That is true and I read that. However, there is a something that caused the problem in the first place and with my experiences with Operating systems, when you have one problem, others will follow.

Got a notebook last year. It came with Vista.
XP install CD doesn't recognize the hard drive controller.
Finally got XP on it over the weekend and got away from that damned Vista! WooHoo!

Used nlite to slipstream SP3 and the HD controller drivers into my XP install CD.
    Worked like a charm.

It's pretty but it's grossly innefficient.
It takes forever to unzip files, copy files across a network, my wireless was flaky, some updates would fail, etc.
    Too many problems to list.

Example: Before wiping the notebook and putting XP on it, I had to copy my files across my network to my server. Copying them from the old Vista install to the server took 7 or 8 hours. (I lost count)
After installing XP, copying them back to my notebook took 30 minutes. This was about 40,000 files and it was about 2.5 GB.

JFYI lots of notebooks have HD options in their BIOS. I had switch mine to IDE from SCSI to get XP to recognize the HD.

Yeah, I found Vista to be very slow unzipping, as a matter of a fact I think I posted here about it. I use 7-Zip which integrates right into the shell (Right Click > Extract here) it's a lot faster then even the XP unzipper.

I've always found Windows, even XP to be horribly slow over the network when compared to Linux.

I needed the SP3 XP CD anyway.
Now, when I have to do installs on other machines, I won't have to install SP3 after I install XP.
If you find yourself installing XP often, I highly suggest checking nlite out.
You can slipstream service packs, drivers, updates and tweaks into the standard XP install CD. Great tool!
