    Default WBA: Windows Bites Azz

Reason #216 why I hate windows: auto update.

One of the things I do after a fresh install on a new PC is turn off the auto update feature. In fact it might be included in the win setup itself come to think of it.

I never in a million years would have it do anything automatically. All I want is to be notified of new updates. I do not need, NAY, WANT windows to do anything for me.

    Why you ask?

case in point: that BAOS (bitch ass operating system) will automatically reboot your PC without you knowing about it!

I have absolutely no earthly idea how our desktop PC did it, but win reset some of the settings including the auto update feature.

So you guessed it, it has automatically rebooted the PC twice in the past 2 weeks without my consent!

    I figured the 1st time...weirdness, 2nd time (last night)....wtf is going on?

I checked the system log and sure enough there is a message...pc will auto rebot in 5 mins to complwete the update. WHAT?

since friggin when! I thought to myself.

GREAT! no matter that I was in the middle of 10 different things, including a massive file conversion of 20K files...now I have to start over :angry-h::angry-h::angry-h:

There is a Godsmack lyric that describes how I feel about windows (perfectly)

    I f'n hate you! you're such a lair!!

It is the first thing I do after a clean install myself.

It's not only intrusive, but heck, you never know if the update is gonna make things better or worse!!!

Same thing on Vista here. But on Vista you cannot disable update notifications. You need to enable at least notifications to even check for updates.

If you think about it Windows Update is the only 'back door' MS has into your computer to change DRM stuff junk so it's imperative for them to keep it on as much as possible.

Under no circumstances should you computer do the opposite of what you tell it do. Burn Windows! j/k I'm actually liking Vista even with the DRM stuffs.

ironically the mrs got this notice from work about "it"?

    Yesterday, Oct. 23rd, Microsoft released a new security update MS08-067 (958644) for Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista & 2008.

This was released now because there is already an active exploitation of this vulnerability. McAfee says; “Spy-agent.da has been observed, in-the-wild, as an associated payload on exploited systems.” Microsoft is recommending immediate installation of this update.

all I know it it cost me 8 hours? of time since it rebooted without asking me!

If you recently installed SP3, that's probably how the updates got turned back on.

That's not good and it will come back to bite you in the ass later.
Best suggestion is to download the full install from Microsoft and save it to your hard drive and run it from there.
The download is 316 MB so don't try this with dial-up! mg:

Doing it this way, will minimize install problems.

those are your rules, not mine! :tongue-h:

    a) I like to live life on the edge, like a squirrel with rabies
    2) since it is hosed and I know it to be so, I might as well do a fresh and funky install. start over!
    c) NOW, the main question is should I give xp 64bit a try?

    or a vista product? :rolleyes-h:,,:lipsrsealed:,:undecided:,

The first thing I do after a fresh install is to turn off all of the sounds and the automatic updates. Not everyone wants to hear all those stupid bells and chimes every time they do something and no way do I want updates without approving them!
