I'll second Zap's words...
I worked at my last place, four years, where they liked certs, if you had a cert they looked at your resume more favorably, but your knowledge is so much more important. Get all the certs you want but make sure that you know your stuff and not just memorize the books. (Just a word of advice, I saw may coworkers come and go over the four years I was their cause they came in knowing the books and nothing else)
Congrats Zap, that's an impressive portfolio.

@Zap 4 MS Certs !! Whoaa ! I have some considerable experience.. but not with servers thoughI'm planning on acquiring MSP for XP then later Vista (for Desktop Support) .. then probably acquire firsthand knowledge and experience with System Administration for the next step which is MCSA..
@jhalstead I don't usually memorize books.. Once I read, see and experience how things work, it would stick in my grey matters... just like a cum would to a tissue(just kidding)

One of these days, I'm going to have to update my certifications to include Server 2003 / Server 2008 and AD.
Too busy working with them to study the books on them. :P
There's nothing like hands on experience to get you familiarized with an O/S.
I have 2 suggestions.
1. Try and get your hands on a copy of Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server and get it installed on a computer in your home. You might be surprised at the hardware requirements. It will run on any P4 system and even some P3 systems as long as you have 1 GB RAM or more. Once you get it installed, start playing with DHCP, DNS, WINS, AD, RAS, Terminal Services, Network Printing, etc.
2. Try to get some hands on experience in a real live computer network environment with servers. Seeing servers in operation will teach you things that the books will never be able to teach you and that knowledge will help you when you put it together with the book knowledge from the MS books.
Good luck.
