    Default Windows 7 Release Candidate

Microsoft has confirmed that there will be no further public beta versions of Windows 7, and that it is now preparing the Release Candidate (RC) build.

However, the company has yet to give an exact date for the operating system’s final release, other than sometime in the second half of 2009.

The disclosure came in an end of January update to the Engineering Windows 7 blog by Steven Sinofsky, Microsoft’s senior vice president for Windows.

Sinofsky wrote that the next milestone for the development of Windows 7 will be the RC, to be followed by the release to manufacturing of the final code and then general availability in retail and on new PCs.

The beta of Windows 7 was made available on 8 January following an earlier pre-beta distributed at Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference (PDC) in October 2008.

The move means that Windows 7 will have had only one official beta before the full version ships, in contrast to recent versions of Microsoft products such as Windows Vista. This is because the company has taken a different approach to development with the new platform, according to Sinofsky.

Rumours have emerged that we may see Windows 7 Released in time for Christmas 2009. But as with all Microsoft OS's there are bound to be delays.

I'm just not getting my hopes up about the new Windows final version. I mean, Vista had pretty good Fanfare in it's early stages but we all know how that turned out.

Also, I agree with some others on the internet that they should giveaway a version of Windows 7. It would also make it easier to stomach the price of a downloadable upgrade for Business and Pro versions. That is, after the train wreck that Vista was, is.

I've had Vista for about a year now and I absolutely despise it compared to how XP was. My opinion, it's a case of catering to the lowest common denominator, the stupid windows user who has trouble finding the internet machine.

I have windows 7 beta and I am very impressed. I love the way the new taskbar works and it loads a lot faster for me than vista does. Anyone tried shaking a window yet? all the other windows you have open get hidden!

Actually Vista is a solid and stable operating system. There were too many factors to make it one of the most hated OS, and trust me none of these factors was poorly written/ bad operating system.

Windows 7 is just an improvement over Vista, it sure fixes some annoying Vista issues, it is also faster than Vista. If you still use XP, like me, you will get a wonderful experience with win7, but it will also require a learning curve. Vista users won't see much difference other than easy to access menus, new task bar, and less UAC prompts and less confusing ways to shutdown your system.:slaugh:

Over all win7 is a great OS, I'm using the beta build 7000 from the day they released it publicly.

I'm not bashing it being stable, I'm making reference to it's endless onslaught of overrides and compatibility issues.

Compatibility issues were/are not Vista's problem..

Lets see why Vista became a disaster, while it has potential of being one of the most powerful OS.

    1) Microsoft's fault - They decided Vista's ill fate the day they lowered Vista capable certification specification to bail out Intel, for their 915 chipset mobos. It allowed PC manufacturers to push junk hardware with Vista preloaded.
Result: Very unpleasant user experience of otherwise a wonderful OS. Frequent crashes, boxes slower than a sloth.

    2) OEM's fault - Before the launch of Vista, microsoft announced that it will only support drivers based on WDDM model. OEMs cried 'Not Enough Time'. So Microsoft dropped WDDM requirement and OEMs were able to ship the PCs with non-compatible or very crappy device drivers.
Result: countless BSOD due to driver issues.

    3) Software developer's fault - They always got away with very poorly written codes. Software using windows registry without any reason or requirement, and leaving a big chunk behind when you uninstall it, resulting in out of control bit rot. But not with Vista. Microsoft decided to force software developers to make properly written codes, with less to no vulnerability. Result: Old software that does not satisfy Vista's strict standards would not run thus compatibility issues.

    4) Fan boys/Ignorant Users/MS haters - They've always been there, but never struck so hard as they did this time. Linux/MAC fan boys and MS haters blogged/Youtubed about non-existing, rumored issues and went to a great length to label Vista as a worst piece of junk ever made. Ignorant users trusted them without using Vista at the first hand.

    5) Some more here and there - OEMs' love for bundling crapware on a junk piece of shit hardware made Vista experience horrible. My new DELL laptop came with Vista and it took about 6 minutes to get into a usable state. My first reaction was - What the fuck!! But then I realized the amount of crapware was on it. I ordered a Vista CD, formatted my HDD, and did a clean install with no trial/Crapware, loaded only programs that I use. And voila, Vista was in it's lightning fast mode.

Also too many confusing Editions of Vista didn't help either rather added to it's unpopularity.

I tested win7 on my thinkpad and wasn't impressed
as for win7 running good on a machine that can run xp, I find it hard to believe
I doubt I'll be upgrading my vista to win7 anytime soon

No, thats pure Ed Bott bullshit.
Keeping in the mind that XP can run on machines with 128MB (Even 64MB) RAM.
I installed Win 7 on machine with just 512 MB RAM and it performed well, at the par with XP. But you go below that, and Win 7 starts to cry.

But in a fair comparison, Win7 is better than Vista and XP both.

I really like Windows 7. It won't play some of my wife's Yahoo! games but with a little tweaking, it works great. I can't say it's much different from Vista really....

I've been using it for a few weeks and it's been very stable. The only bugs I've had have been either minor or due to incompatible drivers (but were solved with some tweaks). To be fair, I use some pretty strange hardware and settings so that's why my drivers didn't quite line up.

The only annoyance I've had so far is that launching a DirectX application seems to disable my batch of rotating wallpapers.
