Thread: Anyone Skype?

Last week I got my new Belkin Skype wifi phone in the mail. I love it, $60 a year for unlimited US & Canada calling plus an incoming number is mega cheap. The phone was $130 but all in all not too bad considering the cost of the service. If the phone lasts me 3 years I figure I'll make out like a bandit.

My main reason for going with Skype plus the Wifi phone is not being locked into a computer. I looked into Magic Jack but that requires your computer be on plus the junkware that comes packaged with MJ. Against all the other VOIP options Skype looked to be the most cost effective.

Anyone else here use Skype?

I will have to try this. I have a ton of VOIP phones in the cupboard but never used any of them.

I use skype from my desktop . As i don't have a laptop when i travel i use prepaid long distance services bec cell phone companies suck ass

Yep. I love Skype as well! The conversation is very clear compare to other services.

VOIP is that the idea? I had no idea you could use a mobile phone to utilize it though!

I wonder if the service is comparable to our Granny Tracfone. We use that b/c we rarely if ever use our mobiles BUT I hate Tracfone crap a** selection of phones. I'd love to have a real phone that took decent pics & vids for example! Mine takes pics but it's like using a 640x480 web cam! junk!!

Timmy, Skype is VOIP but there's a difference. Skype as started and still is a program you download, install and then you have a skype name anyone can call your computer and you can voice chat for free.

Now, they have upsells, you pay like $60 a year for an incoming number so that regular phones can call you and unlimited calling to the US & Canada. You can use the incoming number and outgoing from any computer once you sign into your Skype account.

They also have these Wifi phones, which looks like a cell phone but it's not it's a special phone that connects off your home's wireless network. The one I bought happens to be braned to work with Skype, so it's just like having another phone. In fact if they offered 911 service, I'd buy a second phone, give it to my mother, and drop our landline.

Just this past week Skype came out with an application for the iPhone and iPod touch so you can now use them as a Skype phone, which is pretty cool.

I have Skype with unlimted US & Canada, plus the SkypeIn number and the Linksys IPhone CIT300 cordless VOIP phone (bought as a refurb for $38 off Amazon).

The phone has been great as a cordless. I've even been able to make a call from the next street over with it.

I have never used the video chat because I typically use the phone but I do have a Logitech Orbit MP camera that is compatible with it.

One of the big things I like is I can block anyone not on my contact list or individually.

Yes, the new app is wonderful. I used to have the other apps, like Fring, that crashed, bugged and had bad sound. This Skype app is very good. Sound is incredibly good, its light, does not crash, basically a steady product like many things Skype does. So far I think they had 2 millions downloads... 2 MILLION or something incredible like that, in a few weeks. Wow.

I use Skype almost everyday and it's pretty good for international calls. But, Google Voice is pretty nice also

Skype is cool, but don't use Skype 4.1.0.130 beta. Too much bags.

If I move in with my friend, which appears will be the case. I plan on getting a skype setup or something like it.

can't work without it.. very convenient!

With new Skype you can show video of your desktop. It's nice.

Figured I'd bump this as I'm using the long distance on Skype more and more and love it.. my girlfriend uses it all the time to call her relatives in Kansas City and loves that she can talk as long as she wants..

Just put it on my Netbook and can make phone calls on the road with a WIFI connection!

Just thought I'd also mention that there's an attempt going around on Skype to trick users into installing a patch that will allow hackers access to your account. I got a notification on Skype yesterday that purported to be from Skype (and wasn't) telling me my machine was infected and I needed to install a patch from a site other than Skype. That should be your tip-off; Skype wouldn't have you install a patch from a site other than their own.
