    Default Computers and OS

How many computers do you have in your house and what OS do they run. For the people who dont know what OS stands for - Operating System.

    I have 2 iMacs 24", 2 IBM T60s, IBM T41, 2 IBM T43, 6 Mac Book Pros (2 13", 2 15" and 2 17") and Apple TV.

All the macs are upgraded to Snow Lepored. All the other computers except the IBM T41 have windows XP on them. The IBM T41 has Xubuntu on it.

I have a P4 laptop - time for an upgrade! I also temporarily have a Core i7 with a GeForce GTX 285 that I built for someone. Oh my goodness gaming has never been so sick! Call of Duty runs fantastically on that.

1 HP Desktop off the shelf now running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 RC and Windows 7 RC, when I get a few extra bucks I'm going to max out the RAM and buy a copy of Windows 7. This is my main work computer.

1 Mac Mini running Snow Leopard it's a great little computer mostly use it for email checks/facebook stuff like that. Running more than a couple of programs at a time on it is majorly annoying with the dock (all icons no text) so I don't do any development on it except for quick upgrades/script installs.

1 Acer laptop also running Windows 7 RC and Ubuntu Karmic RC. It's full powered but a little slow (HD seems to be the bottleneck) and is missing a couple of keys usually it stays in my bag for when I go out or my sister uses it around the house. When I'm really busy I power it up and use it for all my FTP'ing with an instant messenger open for clients.

Currently the Mac & HP share a screen, I'd like to buy a second screen so I can keep my email, IM, and music up on the Mac all the time but don't really have enough room on my desk for the screen to be close enough to be really usable.

My next computer purchase will either be a higher end laptop with a dock so I don't have to worry about syncing file changes across three computers however I really want one of those new i7s, so perhaps my next computer will be a mid-ranging gaming machine with support for dual monitors and maxed out RAM out of the box. I'd go all Mac but just cannot justify the expense and when I tired to do something development work last week the dock drove me nuts..so Windows/Linux is probably the way for me to stay.

How has Win 7 RC worked for you so far?

You can always use the Unix command line in Mac if you're familiar with it. That way you can get more done without having to open a bunch of apps that use memory.

Do you use a KVM switch for that?

So far pretty darn good. I've gone back and forth to Vista a couple of times but the RC has been rock solid not one BSD yet. *crosses fingers*

I've dived in to the Terminal a little bit on the OS X side, I figured out I had to install the whole xCode kit (at like 2 GB) just to be able to install wget. I know there's curl and some others but I'm so used to wget's syntax. As much as I love the CLI and have used it I'd still rather a windowed program for most things.

Well I bought one on a whim a few weeks back. The video quality sucked but since my monitor has both a DVI and VGA in it wasn't to big of a deal. Then I started using my MS keyboard within OS X and found when I went back to Windows I was getting keyboard shortcuts reversed. On a Mac with a PC keyboard the Alt key = command so command + v is paste on the windows side it's ctrl v. I kept making the same mistakes (muscle memory) and got annoyed so I put the Apple wireless keyboard back on my desk. I must say except for the lack of navigation keys I really like it.

why do people have so many computers?

I own 2 desktops and 1 laptop. Can't say I use one of the desktops much if at all anymore though (it's pretty old...).

The old Desktop and laptop both run XP pro. My main computer runs Vista, but i'm upgrading to Win7 when I can.

I'm also planning on buying a netbook and installing Win7 on it (as I can get Win7 - or any windows OS - for free from the university).

As long as you can get all your work done on one I guess that's the most important thing.
