What is the difference between VPS and Dedicated servers? I want to start a free forum hosting service, should i start on a VPS and as the site grows, move up to a dedicated server?

p.s sorry for all the questions tonight but i want to get myself organized

You could start with a VPS, keep in mind though no matter what option you choose one person spamming, or hosting illegal content, or using a bad script, etc and you could be in for some serious consequences.

A VPS has multiple other people on the same server, they try to separate the accounts to a degree but not matter how hard they try it doesn't dispute the fact that they reside on the same server. Usually a VPS will give you a certain amount of guaranteed ram, possibly a burstable amount 'should you need it' possibly a guaranteed amount of CPU but not always.

A dedicated server ONLY you will be on it. You will get all the ram, all the CPU, all the hard drive, etc.

Sounds like Dedicated would be the way to go for my venture, huh?

As for spammers, they'd have to go through me and Myself and another person will be monitoring their forums. This is just the forum version of blogging4life.com and mostly likely my kickstart coworkers would be the main people on it

Dedicated will allow you more room for growth, customizations and overall power than a vps. A vps is generally intended for those who want full root access without the cost of a full dedicated server.

VPS (virtual private server) hosting consists of a server divided into multiple isolated accounts, and each VPS account has its own independent operating system with it's own web server and mail server resources... What is VPS hosting

Since free forum service require good effort to promote and it will take time too, so I suggest that you start with VPS (though you need to ultimately promote to dedicated server) but it will save you money in start up which you can use in service promotion. Check a good VPS company which offer managed services and room to grow.

I'm never use VDS for big sites, because of low productivity. I'm suggesting to use only Dedicated - this is your server and you can do wherever you want and control everything.
