In the past few years, I have had 3 hard drives failure: two involving a primary drive, and one a backup drive. This equates to around one drive failure per year. Until recently, I ran 3 servers, each with 2 drives. Therefore the failure rate per year is around 15%.
I wonder whether this is normal or not? The servers involved are now quite old i.e. over 2 years. But it is entirely possible that the drives were not new as datacentres can re-use drives.
