I set up a dynamic ip relay account with afraid.org: the reason for me being that it just seemed the easiest to do of those I looked at although there are numerous such services available.
The main advice I have is this:
once you get your host set up and you try to set up your mail server you may find you will not be able to send email without it being returned.. That will be because you can't actually send your email with your mail server because the originator and the mail server won't match so you will have to set the mail server up to relay though you ISP mail server.
What kind of connection is the server running on? What is the ISP? What are you planning on running on these servers? Are you running Linux? If so, what distribution?
You should go to Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and see how fast your incoming connection speed is. Some ISPs make their incoming connection speed slower than their download connection speed.
If you're running Linux and willing to let me host a few small proxy sites I'll help you get it all set up.
Vectro Web Hosting - Web hosting with solid tech support.
x Proxy Host - Affordable PHP proxy hosting with proxy-specific features.
I would recommend under no circumstance running a proxy on your home network connection, talk about disaster waiting to happen.
I highly doubt your connection will be strong enough, reliable enough, especially with a dynamic IP and standard account for 2 servers.
no-ip.com is another service you can use to get a static ip address..

Hey thanks for your comments something to think about! I am checking out No-IP also!

I agree with vectro ..... if u live in US ... drive to the nearest datacenters.
also agree you will get better service by opting for a commercial server.
My own server has constantly gotten a rating of POOR from webCEO. :ssad:
There is something to be said for getting the experience of doing things for yourself though. I doubt you should experiment with a high volume profit making domain. Stick with the experts that can keep you up and running.
Go ahead and set up your server but host stuff on it that isn't all that
important for actually doing business.
Yeah don't even think about running anything serious on these servers until you know your stuff. Even the pros have their hands full fending off attacks and hacks. But if you're doing it as a learning experience then all the power to ya.![]()
Again this week I got a ranking of POOR for my web server.
That's OK for me because it's a personal web site. But, if I were paying for this level of support ... I'd be gone. :slaugh:
Does anyone know how I might speed up my visitor's DNS LookUp and connect time? That's what's killing me the worst.
Yeah its mainly just to play around with, i will be getting a few static IP's from my ISP which allows web servers and gaming servers, so i will see how it goes!
Cheers
Kev
You can run your own games, mailserver, teamspeak server and thats it on a home connection.. unless you have a supper connection
You should probably colocate those servers. Running them from home is a big no no. It's just not worth it. Datacenters are reliable and provide a better network then your home dsl.
I just thought I'd tell yo I think you should keep going with your own server.
Its a pain in the butt, but Hey! you're learning new stuff every day and being
independent. Good luck!
btw ... my web server rating has risen from 1 (Poor) last post
to 3 (Fair) this post.
I would aggree with the most as to just drive to the nearest DC,colo the servers... Think about it...depending on were you live in the states theirs outages which will cause the servers to lose power and if you have clients or something important going on at the time you'll be dead in the water till they come back up...having them in your home is risky unless it just you playing around with'em.
