Default Is it possible to take backup of our web site on external hard disk ?

    Hello,

My self Pollard and I am managing my client website. The web site size is huge, that is the database and files both will be around 15 GB. We are using a dedicated server. Following are the configuration of the server

    120 GB Hard Disk
    2 GB Ram
    Windows 2003 server

Since the web site size is heavy we have requested our website hosting company that is it possible to take the back up of 1 month on other external hard drive and keep every 3 alternate days backup on the same server. They agreed upon to keep the data of 3 alternate days on the same server but they didn’t agree to keep 1 month backup on external hard drive

The following below were their reply

“Kindly note that it is not possible to take backup on external hard drive. Kindly check and confirm the same. We will be happy to help you if any further assistance is required.”

Please suggest us how to proceed further as we need backup in an emergency.

    Thanks,
    Pollard

    Hi,

Yes, you do need a backup. Do not rely on your web host even the the best like all of us, can make a mistake for time to time.

I am not 100% on hosting info others here are much more proficient then me. But I would not see why it can't be done.

this shouldn't be to hard , ask them why cant the store a backup of your site safely! data is very important and when you loose it , it hurts maybe they can partition the 120gb hd and save it on there. R1Soft's is good for backing up data and protecting it.

So easy with cPanel to make a backup /restor it after a crash.

ask with your host if you can make a ssh script that allow you to compile the backup and make a wget - that will not be a big deal I guess.

External hard drive is tricky. It's better to handle what you need with a second internal hard drive if there is an extra bay available in the server. This can be accomplished with RAID. It's easier to do this sort of thing on a Linux server with cPanel, however.

I think this person is looking for a backup on the server, not a backup to download remotely.

Shouldn't be a difficult task at all. You simply can download the back up materials into your computer's hard drive and then drag and drop the files into an external hard drive. CPanel makes it the easiest thing to do literally.

It downloads in a "zipped" folder.

A lot of control panels allow you to take backups. i know plesk and cpanel does. R1Soft is good. Also, checkout bqbackup and offsite ftp.

I'm in the process of setting up automated offsite backups at the moment, at current we do manual nightly backup 'n' burn to DVD's. Part of our hosting is done on reseller accounts, so we arranged for the host to create a script to dump all the necasery client files into my private directory so i can schedule offsite FTP backup. Organising backups of numerous VPS was a lot simpler.

Also, look into RSYNC protocal, that allows you to keep a synchronized backup of data. I think BQBackup support it.

Whatever you do make sure to store your backup on a server different from your website. If you don't and your server fails you will lose everything. This happened to a business associate some years ago. He did regular backups and felt secure that his website was protected. When the server failed he had to scramble to pull his site back together. He lost data and sales dollars. That was a headache and a huge OUCH!

Secure I will say is, taking own backup as well, and if using dedicated servers, than check with host provider, and go for remote backup, as having multiple back options is good and secure

Using an external hard drive for this is a lot simpler than everyone is making it out to be. It is probably your best bet for high speed transfer storage and reliable back up keeping.

Yes, it is possible to backup your data on external hard drive, but I would recommend you to opt for online backup solutions, as they offers much more advantages over ordinary backup methods such as flexibility to set your backup frequency, more safety, privacy, ability to backup and host your data in multiple locations, easy restore and at affordable cost.
