Errrr you confused me.
Do you mean VDS versus VPS?

Oh yeah,sorry Grim.
Edited.![]()

Not sure to tell you the truth, possibly the software the host runs to seperate the accounts?

Web Directory ----- Paid Directory
Nope, I've never had what is referred to as a VDS account.
I've had almost every type of hosting but that. Standard, reseller, VPS, dedicated, etc, etc, but no VDS

No VDS as far as I know is Virtual Dedicated Server. A dedicated server nobody else is on the server but your own accounts. That is what WTF is on, only I can add accounts or those I gave permission to. I do not have to worry about others stressing out the machine as I pay for full use of it.

Thank you,Grim!
So I guess there can be several accounts on a VDS.I found VPS is cheap..
I would try Dedicated Server.![]()

Yes there can be multiple accounts, possibly 20 or more on a VPS machine depending on the provider!
VPS accounts with a good provider though are pretty damn powerful![]()

My last server (RIP, thank god) was considered a VDS and now I have a VPS. I still have no idea what the difference is either because as far as managing them and domain accounts allowed and all that, they are the exact same. Both had 4 IP addresses, I would like to know if there really was a difference, but I didn't see it.

Thank you!
I got another question:what are the differences between VPS & shared hosting? As I see, both of them are not as expensive as dedicated servers. But what are the differences?I've heard you would have more control on a VPS?
Where did you get your VPS btw?
Till now,I've tried shared host only (from hostgator.com),I'd like to try some other ones and I don't wanna go into trouble..I bet you guys are more experienced.![]()

Sorry to jump into the middle of the convo like this but:
Shared hosting is often a boatload of accounts all piled onto a server fighting for resources. If one site is a hog all the rest are slow.
On a VPS you're guaranteed a certain amount of resources and are normally allowed a "burst" (temporary use) of more resources should you need it temporarily.
Good explanation DB. A VPS is pretty much the step before a dedicated server, right after a reseller. Almost as powerful as a dedicated server. They are available in managed and unmanaged versions just like a dedicated server.

Would you like to recommend me a host or two?
I'd like to give it a try.![]()

servint for a VPS, great price, great service, very powerful.

They also do offer dedicated as well.
That's who I'll be going with in the very near future.

I've seen someone owned a domain like:www.mydomain.com
and I look at the DNS's,they are something like:
ns1.mydomain.com
ns2.mydomain.com
That's pretty cool! Will I get something like this if you get a VPS or dedicated server?
It seems WTF uses custom DNS too.![]()

Ouch,there's something called "Plesk 8.0"??h34r:
Hey G,what do you think is better,Plesk or Cpanel?YOUR opinion. :doot:
Web Directory ----- Paid Directory
I HATE plesk, I only tried it once for a day or 2 though. Visually it was nice, I however am going back to Plesk for the new server I just paid for!mg:
I overall prefer cpanel with whm though.

Totall agree. I just got rid of my Plesk and am so glad. The easy of use of cpanle versus plesk isn't even comparable. Plus, as I learned now moving my old plesk VDS to servint VPS, Plesk will not transfer to cpanel autmoatically like other, so your really stuc if you ever want to change to cpanle to doing one site at a time like I did. Obviously it isn't a big deal if you don't have many sites but I had over 50 to move and a ton of SQLs and it SUCKED! Highly recommend going with cpanel!

Thank you ,guys!
I just did a search on WHT,seems that servint.com is a reputed company with tons of positive feedbacks!

They're the best I've ever encountered. I'm one of the guys that just cannot shut up about them.I'm a picky mofo when it comes to hosts, they've been the only company that I've stuck with.
Uptime stats from my VPS:
I would be up longer but I upgraded to the next plan.Code:ourdjtal@ourdjtalk.com [~]# uptime 05:58:28 up 24 days, 21:04, 1 user, load average: 0.01, 0.02, 0.00
I had a very, very small outage from them about a week ago. It was literally only a couple of minutes, not sure what went on.
My uptime stats are usually a month or more, I routinely reboot my servers for greater speeds thoughBetter safe than sorry or something like that.
My store software though, when it generates the actual site files is faster on my VPS than my dedicated servers!
Another plus to VPS over dedicated is usually you get better managed services for less, you also get a control panel usually for free. Cpanel costs another $25-$30 on a dedicated monthly. 1/2 the cost or so of a VPS in total!

I've only had one outage for about 5 minutes when I first started the plan and was emailed beforehand that they we're planning network maintenance.
I think I'll upgrade one more time when I need to, then I'll move to a fully dedicated with another company. When I see fully a dedicated for less than my VPS I start thinking.mg: The only thing thing that worries me is not having a managed setup. I know my way around the command line but don't know 100% what I need to know to harden a server.
My outage 'might' have been caused by a proxy on that VPS as well
A 'normal' dedicated wont be more powerful in ways as I've stated the VPS at servint is more powerful than my dedicateds. I have more ram, more hard drive space, more bandwidth, but those dual core, dual cpu's sure run certain things a hell of alot quicker than these single cpu servers.
Management is another thing. My dedicateds are managed, but don't believe to the extent that servint offers.
BTW my new dedicated I am paying LESS than my overall bill at servint for their base VPS with add on IPS!
Your spot on there grim, VPS accounts can be super powerful. Its a bit misleading really as Virtual Private Server (VPS) are a step up from reselling packages.
You can host infinite sites depending on the size of the server and how you manage it. I've not used reselling for a long time, can you allocate dedicated IP addresses' to each account as you can with a VPS?
