    Default VSP account, IP question

    Greetings,

I'm new to the world of VSPs, and I just got set up on my first one.

I've got about 2 dozen websites, and previously, i have them set up on about 8 different cpanel accounts, with the remaining urls as 'addons'.

I thought it would be great to put all of my websites as addons to one cpanel account, so I would only have 1 FTP/cpanel username and password to remember, and i could manage all of my databases from one place.

I've got all that set up now, but now I'm wondering about IPs. i have 4 or 5 of my websites that I like to have on a dedicated IP. I've purchased the IPs, but I don't see a way to add them to a 'addon' account.

Now I fear that an website needs to have it's own cpanel account in order to have a dedicated IP. Can anyone confirm this for me?

It depends on your VPS, I have 3 IPs that came with mine from servint. When I had GoDaddy they gave me only 2 IPs. Therefore I have them broken up a little but not totally. You'll have to look at your plan and see what they offer you. I think most offer multiple IPs but not sure on that one. :-)

IP is dedicated for a whole account, you cant set individual IPs for Add-ons (AFAIK). you have to assign the IP to your individual accounts in WHM.

And Putting all of your sites in one single account isnt something wise to do, if one got hacked, all are gone...

Personally I find it much, much, much easier and more umm powerful I guess would the be word to give all sites their own cpanel account. You can easily manage the databases from WHM, you can also auto login to any account from WHM, you can also use SSH in most cases with a VPS account to cut down on ftp accounts.

Yes, my VPS came with 10 dedicated IPs (for an additional $10 per month). And I see how to assign them to a cpanel account through WHM, however, I don't see a way to assign them to an addon account.

That's an outstanding point, and one that I had not thought of. Thank you.

I just found the SQL Services link in WHM, so now I see what you mean about getting into all databases from there. Thanks. Also didn't know about being able to log into any cpanel account from there. That helps as well. As for the SSH, I do a few things by command line, but mostly I do alot of developing using a text editor with FTP, SFTP or SSH2 capability (like UltraEdit).

You cannot [currently] place an Add-On Domain on a Dedicated IP Address.

Dedicated IP Addresses are restricted to full web hosting accounts only at the moment. CPanel/DarkOrb does have a feature request form I believe, you may wish to contact them.

They are not the quickest to add features to CPanel (given Apache 2 is still not deemed stable and it's been available for quite some time now), however, it's worth a shot.
