    Default Running my own server?

Currently trying to do some small servers with my computer parts i have lying around, not sure wether it's worth hosting small sites on a abyss webserver or not. Any feedback on this? Will only be hosting some small content pages with lesser downloads than most sites have and they will be very lightweight.

What could i do to make it to a good experience? Going to install ASP as well as MySQL and stuff like that, not sure if i should go with apache triad or something like that or the one i am trying called Abyss.

Before actually serving content from your home internet connection, I would double-check with your ISP and see if they allow such. Many ISP's disallow the use of their services for web hosting purposes, whether personal or business. Many will also suspend or terminate your services.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that a home connection will not be able to handle a great deal of traffic. Even with a 5-10MB broadband connection, you're still going to run into speed issues.

Web hosting providers use multiple connections through various providers, some of which are providing GBPS connections and are not capped at a specific speed like home and business class connections are.

If your ISP gives you the OK, then I would do my best to setup a flavor of linux, not use Windows XP, Vista or 2000. You'll have an easier time managing a server using linux over windows and it will be a bit easier to secure (from experience).

Try CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu (probably the easier to install for those new to linux installation).

Well this is only supposed to be used by my own smaller sites that i do not have that much effort put into and also some friends smaller sites. Linux is out of hand for me as i am not that familiar with it as well

Seems like you're putting a lot of time & energy into just hosting a few small sites. With the low cost of hosting nowadays i think you're better off signing up for a paid hosting account.. one you can host multiple domains.

If you do run your own server they're also security to think about as well as managing the server. If you do decide to build your own, I'd suggest going with Linux & Apache.

not necessarily. If google lists your site and you are running exploited software like an old version of phphBB or WordPress. Hackers can easily find your server, exploit it and use it for spamming or attack purposes.

I'm sure you could find someone willing to donate some hosting to you. Just a lot of effort for not much benefit and hell, risking a home internet connection doesn't seem worth it.

    No matter how insignificant.

If it's 'limited' you should be ok. I ran my own ftp server for a bit, primarily to backup my servers nightly to my home network and such.

I had a friend who ran his own server, was running a free host for everyone, and spent way to much time on it. Server got hacked before the month was done.

It all depends on what your using it for, and if its just for friends to visit and small sites set up, its should be fine.

All in all, I think davet about simply getting a cheap paid hosting solution.
