    Exclamation Unix or Linux

    Hello,

As I have sites with intensive cgi scripts I always preferred the UNIX

But currently the UNIX is in low, exists few VPS hostings with this operational system

LINUX or UNIX, what is the better?

It will be that scripts twirls in the same speed in both operational systems?

I'd say Linux is easier to use, and it's got a graphical user interface as well that's really easy to work around with.

Unix is more text based, so you'd need to know some more information about the commands, but Unix uses less RAM and CPU use for the most part, and is much more efficient, but like I said, Linux is easier to work around with if you need a GUI.

I never seen a host supply linux with a gui. Linux is a basically a free version of unix. Both operate about the same and are text based natively.

Unix I believe is much more robust and a a paid product for the enterprise. But there are various flavors of both. Thus the nix designation.

But hey, what do I know?

Yeah, a GUI would be a total waste of processor time for a hosting service not to mention bandwidth.

Now GUI'd Linux on the desktop is sweet, but since you didn't ask about that I'll pipe down.

I think UNIX would be better, especially BSD systems. It's fast and reliable.

There is no best OS for everyone, but there is a best OS for you.

Most cgi scripts should be able to run on any *nix/Linux as long as they support the language and modules that the script calls. He should choose an OS that he's comfortable with troubleshooting with problem.

That being said, he will find more support in the webhosting industry for Linux, so if he runs into problems he will probably haven an easier time troubleshooting. But I wouldn't rule out FreeBSD, it's a close second.

AFAIK CentOS is the prefered distro for web hosting. I'd avoid Fedora as it changes a lot and Ubuntu always needs updating.

I will choose LINUX, I have used it and I am more familiar using this OS. Not only that it was more user friendly:stongue:

As far as I know and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Linux is a Unix variant. Unix is copyrighted by some university and is commercial software. The Linux kernel on the other hand is free for anyone to use or modify for their own purposes.

Unix and Linux share similar commands but the actual commands are a little different.

Linux is comparatively easier to manage and it supports more applications than that of unix.
