Hello mountlaurel,
If you are looking to host proxy websites I will suggest you to go for a dedicated box, as this will offer you more reliability and good overall performance. TBH, proxy websites are quite resource intensive and they consume good amount of bandwidth. At the start you can have a small configured box and keep monitoring the bandwidth usage, and accordingly depending upon your requirement you can build high end server
Please let me know in case you have any questions in this regards, I will be glad to assist you
Thank you.

if you guys are looking for proxy dedicated servers, there is a guy in proxy.org forums who everyone says provides great solutions. I never met him or talked on the forum, but alot of people recommend him.
i know that person.. he is thewird
One thing when checking out potential hosts, ask them if you are allowed to host a proxy on their accounts. A lot of hosts prohibit proxy services because of the load it causes on their servers and your account will be terminated without reimbursement.

I never had that happen, but I guess anythings possible. I had 2 servers dedicated to web proxy and was pushing some serious traffic, so much that I had to turn off logging because the log files would fill up in a matter of hours. Then I sat down and looked at the logs and realized that it wasn't worth jeopardizing my business having these users hit the sites they were hitting.

Hello,
Yes, you can start with a VPS but for that you will need to make a good research for reliable proxy vps provider.
I started running a proxy on a VPS from Servint and had nothing but success. Highly recommended. They just added additional bandwidth and storage to all of their plans for no additional cost too....

Go with a VPS or cheap server first. After you build your proxies network (around 10+), start thinking of upgrading your server to dedi.
Dont start out with dedi if you are only planning to build a couple proxies.
vpslink has 100% unmanaged servers, dirty cheap(7.95/mo and up)
But ya gotta know linux, and well.

I've used powervps for proxies. I'd check them out - they have bandwidth options on their vps plans that are comparable to a dedicated machine.
if you want to be serious in building proxies the answer is : dedicated server , at least 2GB Ram and Dual Core CPU
My business partner is correct. I'd highly recommend looking at powervps. They are one of the few vps hosts who allow proxies. Also, take a look at burst.netI've used powervps for proxies.
