I am starting up a directory site, mostly because I have the budget to play with it since addon domains at my host or around 30/3 years. Should I use a domain for my directory or would directory.mysite.com work just as well?

A subdomain is fine, it's viewed as a whole new domain by search engines. Why, is something else going to be in the root of the domain? I think root is ideal for everything if nothing else is going to be using it.
If you have a website you're going to link it to, and not run it standalone.
Like a network, such as here.
They have webtalkdirectory, webtalkproxy, webtalkforums, etc etc.
If you have something like that, it could possibly work as a subdomain.
Otherwise, just get another domain.

I have a domain called growyourforums.com and another called webtalkcafe.com
they both share the space, as one is an addon domain. Space is no issue-so do y'all think a subdomain will work just as good?

Yes, a subdomain is fine. Having your sites all on the same IP isn't a good idea though.

why not?

This thread explains better than I could, Does the same IP address devalue links between the sites?

but like how can i have different ips? I live in one house. or do websites have capabilities to have unique ips?

uh i see! I remember seeing that when i bought my hosting. I think I'll spring for the extra cash to have a different ip on webtalkcafe and any other domains i buy
branding on one domain with different subdomains is a good way of marketing.
I would suggest you to start with a subdomain

Thanks, that is what I am doing to the stuff related to the domain name
