When listed in the Yahoo! Directory it is easier to get indexed and rank higher in crawler-based results of Yahoo. While in DMOZ, although it is free, there's no guaranteed turnaround time for acceptance in submitting your site. But once your site is accepted, you'll be able to get your site visibility / popularity because DMOZ is one of the largest categorized directory of websites and pages, which is staffed by volunteers..

Truth is they do very little for your site except in the value of a back link. The advantage is that many directories use DMOZ as a dump for their own directory so one link could result in many. As far as ranking any better, I have not seen any advantage from my listing in DMOZ. My ranking for keywords or my PR have not increased because of it.

It does seem to be attractive to other webmaster when you go to sell links or the site so you may see some benefits in this way.

Submit to them and forget them like any other directory. They were more important when they were one of the few directories on the Internet. The stress many webmasters get trying to get listed is crazy.

I had 20 blogs and bought a Yahoo directory for one of them. The rest was the same. After 2 years I can say that the difference was very little...

Can't compare DMOZ with Yahoo! Dir. Yahoo! Dir is used only by Yahoo! when DMOZ database is used by Altavista, Google, AOL ... and some other small directories / sites.

The difference is not big, but it exists. It brings a small fraction of authority to your domains, but only with added quality you'll manage good results.

Honestly, I would bother with either now. There was a time when being admitted into the Yahoo directory was the only thing you needed to do to get traffic. You don't have to do SEO at all, things were much simpler then.

yahoo directory is good...no questions about it.. but i find it hard to justify the $200+ fees per year unless going for a major online promotion campaign. it gives some visitors direct from the directory as well

If its googles start point, then why have they removed "directory submission" from their webmaster guidelines?

I have never been included in either although thats not for the lack of trying with dmoz and as for yahoo if you have a few sites it would add up to a hefty bill that the possible benefits might struggle to justify.

I have one site that I submitted to DMOZ ages ago. It was accepted in a couple of months. Did a backlink check for this site recently and found a lot of baklinks from directories that use DMOZ as information source. Was pleased to see this. However, I still get very little traffic to that site, since I haven't done much other promotion for it. Have to conclude that DMOZ isn't very helpful in that regard.

Main difference between Dmoz and Yahoo is that You have to pay to get into Yahoo, and Dmoz pays people to get you not listed :devlish:
