    Default Installing directory script

Quick question. I (as many of you know) have been trying to update my directory scripts. I am unable to get phpld to work, hosting issues, gotta love it. Anyway, my current script has a new version that I will attempt to use again. The current version I have running is riddled with bugs. If I uninstall the entire old script and install the newest version, hooking it up to my existing SQL will it keep all my previous info, clients info in it as long as the tables are all the same which I would assume they are?

    One word: BACKUP

If you are using phpld scripts, it has always been safe with the databases.
    Or at least for me.
Going from one script to another, there may be issues.
So back to the word of the day: BACKUP

An upgrade should just let you overwrite the files and have an upgrade script, does it mention this in the instructions? You don't uninstall in normal cases.

All the below is void if you have plesk.
Had that way back when, and I could not want to get rid of it!

Go to cpanel, then to mysql.
Then down at the bottom, phpadmin.
From there, easy to create a backup to your computer.

Must be some bad mojo if phpld can not work!!!

    How about a new host?

We've considered a new host, but the price was right. You get what you paid for thoug LOL. We have a virtual server with them and elsewhere the price is just so insane and we have so many active sites it has to be some type of server we have. The issue with phpld isn't unobtainable. I would just have to go into my serve and reconfigure things, which I may actually do down the line but I just don't have time for it right no and need my directories to be working without so many issues.
Plesk does have phpmyadmin though so I assume in there I could back it up if I was smart.

A few extra bucks is well worth it, a good running server and the time you save will pay itself back 10x.

Servint it's that expensive and would give you a much more reliable VPS solution.

Also and I'm not saying this to be rude but hopefully to save you major pains.
If you are hosting all of your sites on one server it is a HUGE mistake.

Not even for seo purposes, but that reason alone you should not.

Imagine if that server goes down ALL of your sites are down.

I learned that painful lesson years ago, I at bare minimum run 2-3 servers now. Even with the extra expense I make up for it simply because when 1 server goes down not all of my sites are down.

Not only this, imagine if something major happens. The hard drive goes out on your current host and their backup fails? Think it can't happen? It's happened to me more than once where the hard drive failed, raid backup failed and had to rely on an old backup as all the previous backups were corrupt.

You'd seriously be better off running at least 2 different hosts especially if you're running many sites. The extra $$$ will be well worth it.

One word about grim's thesis here: TRUE!

Why over the past few months, been moving sites to new hosts.
Spreading it all out here and there.

I have been there, and done that.
About hosts going down for good!
In fact, I surely must hold some kind of record for hosts going down for good.

I totally agree Grim. We had this happen a few months ago, lost all the sites on our server. It was right before a site launch too which put us in a Great mood! We do have our workhorse sites on different hosting so that those (the moneymakers) don't have the issue. I do agree we need to figure out hosting better :-) Our only saving grace so far is that our dedicated guy for our hosting is amazing at fixing issues ASAP, although we hate the risk of it all.

With a provider like servint you will have a team of techs at your call. Not having to wait on when one guy has time.

BTW having all of your 'money making sites' on one server is just as bad. I have my money making sites split up. Imagine if your money making sites all on one server, that server goes down.

In the end it's your decision, I just know from experience and many, many headaches and lost thousands of dollars which way I'd do it

That was misstated. We have our "money makers" on individual hosting accounts, I should have said. We figured this way they won't be effected if the server crashes, and if they crash, we can throw them on our server.

Has anyone ever uploaded a script and the .htaccess file will not upload via the ftp client? I remember this happened before and I don't remember how I fixed it of course...that would be helpful LOL

It's probably uploading, you just can't see it there, in my ftp program I have to type -a into this little box in order to see the .htaccess file on the server.

That's a good plan. Just trying to share my experience. I've had so many times where a server went down and I lost hundreds to thousands of dollars. Splitting them up even with extra cost saves money in the long term.

Once in a great while, I notice that also.
SO I either create a .htaccess file, or empty out the one that is already there.
Then just upload the contents of the new file.

    Works for me.
