1. Does anyone know the going rate for directories? How much should someone charge or pay for a directory listing. I'm sure it's based on the directory page rank, but I don't really have a scale to work with.


2. When someone first starts a directory, should they include links to high ranking pages relating to the niche, so that they don't have a blank directory at the beginning?

Price depends on much more than just page rank IMO, traffic, does it have it's own IP, is it filled with links already, niche, general, etc.

As far as the directory and high ranking pages, IMO yes it helps as it's content, it shows others that people are listing on the directory even if falsely.

Thanks for the info Grim. I noticed you had a few directories in your signature. How much do you charge? Have you ever paid for a listing? I'm trying to get a ballpark figure. I decided to give the phpld a try, but can't figure out what a reasonable price should be.

I've paid many of times, I charge very little ATM as my directories are new.
If it's a new directory w/o many links coming to it you wouldn't be charging much at all. Even with how agressively I am advertising my own directory I think it's $9.99 for the top link on the directory and I've spent literally thousands of dollars now! mg:

you can do what you want, but we won't let you get any live links unless it's php link

Yes, like grim says, you are very welcome even if you do use an off-brand directory script.

Yes Pricing in different directories are different it depends also in the webmaster of the directories..

Also depends upon PR of the directory...

A1 Directories are considered above PR5+

Not everyone will rank a directory by it's PR if they know anything at all.

nanobi .... pricing your directory can be a little tough, there are many variables as many of the members here have already pointed out. Here is a link to a nice video and editorial on "Submitting to Web Directories to Build Your Link Profile" so basically this will tell you what kind of directories people look for to submit to. It will assist you in determining if your directory is feasible. Remember the key to directories is to build value and then profit.

Your front page may be a PR6 but all your category pages are PR0!!

My friend previously has a PR5 website (not a directory).
But recently he convert it to directory, and after the last google PR update, the PR is drop to 0.

It shouldn't be from the conversion. Something else must have happened.
He could have converted it into a ham sandwich and it still should have maintained some PR.

The most of the directories start as free, but turn to paid as soon as they get some PR. I think you should have a paid option, but you have to keep the free option also in order to grow fast. You will notice, with the time more and more people will consider a paid listing.

^ if more people kept that philospophy they would have more successful directories IMHO. Having just gone through tons of directories to link up my new site I found the exact opposite. Newbie directories chargin way too much for no pr, no sites in their directory and the more experienced directories charging little money, buthaving pr and relevance/niche.

I'm going through submissions right now and I am TOTALLY AMAZED at the shit that is out there. We're talking directories with nothing in them charging for inclusion or requiring a recip.

You guys want my money? Tell you what!!! Limit the number of listing per category to say 35 per cat and sub. Make sure you have a boat load of traffic to your directory. Keep your directory updated and remove sites that are no longer up or have changed ownership and do not represent the description of their initial inclusion.

I will be happy to pay you $100 bucks a pop!

Pricing is depends on your directory.
For PR6 directory you can charge around $20-$30 - if you have a lot of traffic you can ask for more.

But even if you have a strong directory with only PR4 you can still ask for $10 or so.

hope that there's always a free for others to submit to...
