    Default Finally released.

I would have posted this in thread specially created for phplynx but for reasons only known to people on this forum It was closed without allowing me the right to respond.

Anyway, as promised the final free version of the phpLynx script has been released and can be downloaded from our forum. The admin area to the demo site has been disabled as the moment we uploaded it some clown took it upon themselves to delete the database. If you want to put the script through its paces you can download it free.

You might hate me, you'll love the script!

You did respond and there was a response to your response and a response to that response and so on and so forth.
If you're really unclear as to why the thread was closed, I suggest you go back and reread it from the perspective of one of the rest of us users who doesn't really care much about the petty arguement contained within it.
You seem like a bright guy. After rereading that thread and seeing where it was headed, I'm sure you can figure out why it was closed.

    Good luck with your script.

I downloaded it last night, that's a huge file. Let me tell you why I didn't do anything with it.

    It's encryped. I don't use "free" code that I can't play with.

I'm sure it's just me, but if it's free, I see no need for it to be encryped. Plus, I don't run Zend on my server. (How do you guys see it worth while to buy a $1000.00 encrypter to give away code?)

I was all set to do a comparision to a dir script I use and know pretty well, but due to encoding, I don't think a comparision will be fair. I like to do nuts and bolts comparisions, not just screen for screen compares.

I also like to look at the code for certain types of function calls before I install it on my server. You'd need a pretty good past reputation for me to "trust" you with encryped code. When I say you, I mean a software company, not you yourself.

I like your ideas, I can live with the things about you Lacabre don't like, I see a lot of myself in your postings hehe, but I can't get on board just yet with this peice of software. I am looking for a dir script alternative too.

noppid - i downloaded it last night as well. I read through the installation instructions PDF, which are pretty good and include nice graphical illustrations. I'm currently trying to decide where (which server) to install it onto and which dataset to import into it. I'm with you as well - in terms of nuts and bolts. You may want to find an old box you have sitting in the corner and fire it up on that box.

From a 'non coding' user stand point I personally find the idea of it being encoded a good thing. The less people that can look at the source the less people can hack it and find flaws.

Of course if you can't look at it who's to say the code isnt' crap, isn't spying on you yourself or giving them backdoors. Guess the price you pay though, just my 2 cents on the subject.

My shopping carts require zend, doesn't bother me one bit, if anything I'm glad they do.

No its just not you.. I too am dont like any script that is encrypted...
I have had problems with encrypted scripts in the past....

I love to see in the codes to find out what actually going on..

There are few major flaws of using encrypted codes.

    1. Not everyone runs Zend on their serves

    2. Since it is encrypted no one else but your programmer will be able to find bugs in your script

    3. since there is already a very good PHP dir script is available (PHPLD), I am sure many people like me and noppid will stay away from your script

    4. even if it is encrypted its not every hard to crack zend.. infact its pretty easy for them, who know it..

So Come on pal, Its open source era.. Rethink about it..

    This point here.
Most do have Zend, those do not have it in most cases can easily have it installed in minutes for free. There are many, many programs that require it or another add on to the server. This alone is not a reason at all in my eyes to nock a script.

Vbulletin requires certain items be installed on a server, all scripts for the most part do.

As long as the html/templating parts aren't encoded, I am happy, cause then I can work with it design-wise. From what he told me, it's using smarty templates, so I assume the templates are not encoded since he didn't say they are. Why would people need or want to edit the core of the script anyway?

No box script will do everything you want and some features could be disabled if necessary.

I could think of dozens of reasons to need access to script source code.

I'm kicking tires here. But I kick from the inside out and in this case I can't.

As for the documentation, the pdf was a top notch piece of work. I was very impressed with that.

Its your personal choice noppid I wont knock you for that, if you like playing about with script code and have the ability that's cool, there's loads of OS out there that you can have fun with.

I was going to quote a poster on dp on why we use ecrypted code for the guts of the script but people here have done that better than I could have.

It would be great if you could set aside your reservations one day, maybe sometime in the future you'd think about giving the script a go.

    Thanks

The thing is, I really can't learn anything from it in it's current form. So, if I need a directory, I may give it a go. But a test is gonna have to wait for a need to arise.

Maybe it's a thing with being a coder, I dunno. But if I'm gonna run it on my server, I need to be able to see what is gonna happen. I'm way too paranoid.

I'm not saying you would do anything wrong and you're probably a better coder then I am, but it's just a thing.

I respect that some will want to play with the code of a script and will never argue on that point.

Maybe it's a thing with being a coder, I dunno. But if I'm gonna run it on my server, I need to be able to see what is gonna happen. I'm way too paranoid.
There is nothing wrong with being paranoid, we can tell you that the only reason the code is encrypted using the highest level of obfuscation is to prevent source code theft nothing more.

I'm not saying you would do anything wrong and you're probably a better coder then I am, but it's just a thing.
Most software developers encode thier property with no other motive than protection of the script and of course security, we're no different. I'm no coder, It's not common knowledge but the cantufind Network are a pretty big company and sport a team of full time programmers working in-house, I just pay the wages, and come to forums to get beaten up.

The good thing to come out of this thread that it is clear that there may be a market for two different types of directory script, one that coders can play with and one that users can take out of the box and pretty much let it get on with the job.

As was mentioned above, the .tpl files are not encryted so the templates can be worked on to your hearts content, might not be enough for the die-hards, its enough for me though I get lost on a 'fetch argument'.
