Default PhpLD Directory (Need alot of your guidance)

Hello everyone,

I finally have bought a domain + hosting for my first website directory.. the directory is www.linksbucket.com

I wanted it to complete first then announce it but I am having some problems thats why I can't complete it on my own.

Actually one of my friend who knows about hosting and php installed the phpld script on my server, he has no idea about phpld directories thats why he can't help me more on this.

I asked one of my other friend who did excellent job for me and added all the categories there and changed the template for me.

Now I don't want to bother him again to keep asking for help thats why I came here and going to ask for some help.

1. Does anybody on this forum know something about phpld directories? Please tell me how can I add links on the categories on the right side of the homepage saying " Relevant Sites" "Useful Resources"?? I tried to do it but I can't see any option in the control panel.

2. If you go to this site you will see "Three Featured Links" below the categories and are highlighted in yellow background, Can you please tell me how can I have those kinda links on my page?

Please help me in getting my directory to a better position

Thanks

To answer number 1, quite simple.
Go to your cpanel and into the templates, should be a file that would say something like rightsidebar, or similar.
That is where you would add the links you want.
Myself, I use my ftp program as faster than going into cpanel.

Number 2, if not part of the script, it would be a mod.
Go to the phpldlinks forum for finding it.

Thank you Iowadawg, I just got the way to make "Featured Links"

See this page Linksbucket - General Website Directory - Arts & Humanities

I just put a dummy site there, for testing.

I still can't find the way to make links on the right side bar... Let see if anyone here knows about it.

ONe more time, more slowly this time:

Go to your cpanel of your directory, click on file manager.

Click on public_html

Click on templates folder

There should be a .tpl file for rightsidebar, sidebarright, or something to that effect.

That is where you open it up, and voila!
You can add, delete, change links!

However, some template designers DO NOT create an additional template for the sidebar action, sometimes it's coded right into the files. He needs to look in them all for that code, probably main.tpl or something.

Yeah, forgot that one!
Some coders are not too good and do this.

Anyways, bottom line is go to templates and look at each tpl file.

Got my first directory myself and got that problem.
I saw it easy through the cPanel though.
Playing with it is the best way to have a good control...

Exactly... I went to Control Panel > File Manager > Public.html > There I found a file Main.tplbut no filename like rightsidebar, sidebar, rightside...etc

Now How can I edit it?

You click edit, I don't know if the cpanel editor will let you view tpl code properly, however, look for words that are in the sidebar in order to find it, or just ask the person who made the template.

Yes I can see the code and cpanel is allowing me to edit it but I don't want to edit it because i have NO knowledge of coding at all... Let me ask the friend who did it for me.

Thanks to all of you.

Anyone want to submit his link on my new directory?

I have temp/ where my side, top, bottom tpl.php files are.
However, I can't change or update them as I have "no permission" to do so.
I ftp them with the change made but they come back unchanged...

How can I do that.
I ftp with WS_ftp or cPanel.
Which one is easiest and how to proceed?
I check write on cPanel but no change however, because I'm not good at chmod, maybe it's not how to do...

I use ws_ftp for this, you right click the file, then in the menu which comes up go down to "Properties" and click. Enter "666" for Numeric Value, then click ok.

I could be wrong here, but you are trying to edit files in the wrong place. You should look for /templates/_Name of Template/*.tpl

The /temp directory is for the cache of the smarty crap phpLD uses and a few other things. This might be why you are not seeing your changes.

Do you have Shell access to your host? I'm scared to ask after reading this far in the thread....but if you do have shell access and you can't use a simple ftp tool to chmod your files....shell access will allow you to do so via the cmd line syntax.

If you don't know what "shell" is, then it's best you not even bother trying to use it. FYI...it's the OS command line interface.

If you don't have a /*template_name/ folder in the templates folder it may be in the /default folder. Try looking there.

Where did you get the template from? Did you upload it yourself? If so, then you should know where/what folder to look in to modify the .tpl files.

I am now understanding the directory coding a little. There are still some bugs kinda things that need to be fixed. Me & my friend are working on it. As soon as it will be completed 100% I will start promoting it

Btw, How the domain Linksbucket.com is?? Does it sound good?
