    Default Business Directory or General?

I noticed by looking at the directory lists out there that there are now literally tens of thousands of general purpose directories out there now. mg: Would it be better to concentrate on niche markets now in particular business niches' or do you think that there is still room for even more general purpose directories?

I would suppose with the saturation, that niche directories would be the better option.

I think it depends on what you are going to do with the directory, once you've created it.
There are tens of thousands of general directories, but few heavily promoted really good ones.

If you are planning to promote a good directory and rise to the top of the heap, keep the directory clean, I see no reason why another general directory can't be created.

Niche directories are the best way to get theme based links and more relevant traffic which convert into sale.

I agree with Zap, although there already so many out there, most are just crap !

we do manual submissions professionally, we visit up to 2000 directories daily, most of them we visit a couple of times each and every day ... well, not that many quality directories out there !

if you search this forum a few weeks back somebody had a rant about what not to do as a directory owner, read it, it's a good start

if I can give you 1 golden tip : demand minimum 500 characters description, this will force people to come up- with some decent description, different from what they insert in other directories and put in big bold red : don't copy/paste it from your site, we delete those !

this way, you'll get a directory with original content and google will love you for it !

    Good question Kev...

My take is that in terms of general directories .. there are some very good opportunities left for those who want to provide "localized" general directories eg: Seattle Area Directory.

More so, for those that are a little more gifted and can create "country" specific general directories will also do well, especially if it is an up and coming country eg: Argentina Web Directory and if the directory is based on their native tongue and not just english.

Ideally there are also many untapped niche markets dying for someone to establish business verticals with a built-in directory amongst other features.

With the recent google penalization/delisting of major directories out there, I would recommend that people look at verticals as a way to create a sustainable working modell and business.

Thanks Frank, it was the major shake up of Google and the dare I say it, 'heavily promoted' directories and their impending doom that prompted me to have concern. The market does seem saturated to the point of bursting and with no-one apparently willing to learn lessons.

I've seen your business model Frank and that's certainly one I'd go with, lets just hope other people see the light to as it isn't nice to see people misled as they are at the minute. It's like lemmings falling off a cliff, the top one goes, the rest follow. So Sad.
