    Default Network Of Subdomains?

I was thinking of getting a good subdomain (maybe gameover.com ) and instead of registering new domains all the time, just use subdomains.

For example, I want to start a website review blog and build it it PR4 and charge $10 per review, it could be reviews.gameover.com

I also want to start article writing again, I could have content.gameover.com

I also want to start designing logos when I buy photoshop, it could be graphics.gameover.com

And finally, I have a spare phpLB license which I could use on bid.gameover.com

I know the GameOver domain will be expensive to get but it will be something to work towards.

I might start this project at the end of the year after I have finished school and made some $$ from article writing.

I am back to school tomorrow and over the next 6 months I will have very little time for websites.

I need to be getting around 80-85% in my subjects to get into the uni course I want to.

I will definitely note this idea down in my notebook for future reference anyway

I register lots of domain names and build content on them. Hadn't thought of the sub domain route, do you think having a subdomain would be as good as having the pure domain name?

You'd be better off registering domains for each new project. A network of websites on their own domains would be worth way more than a network of sites on the same domain.

Also, you wont ever be able to sell one of the projects off, you can only sell the entire network.

I don't think there is much chance of getting gameover.com -- it's been registered since 1997

Subdomains can be a very powerful tool. They allow you to use multiple server types with different OS's and different service capabilities.

Here is an example that I use-
domain.com - Get online with a domain name and web hosting is the generic website, costs me <$5 monthly

search.domain.com is another website which is a mirror of the primary, but it also has a search index for all of its contents and a script page that shoots out search results via RSS to the search feature on the www site. To use a similiar service on the main site would cause me to upgrade to a plan costing me an additional $25 a month.
web2.domain.com also points to the search.domain.com site, and is a backup in case the primary site is down

mail.domain.com is for email services. I have many more people that need email than my cheap plan costs, to get the qty correct I would need to upgrade my plan. It also allows me to keep a copy of all ingoing/outgoing mail, as I need record keeping due to FOIA for that client. I also get to charge more for that mail archive

media.domain.com is pointing to a Windows Media Server. This allows me live streaming capabilities. My host does not provide this service, so I would need to go to another host for $5 monthly

cell.domain.com is pointing to a Darwin Media Server. This server broadcasts a mirror of the win media server that can be received by most cell phones

In your case, a prime domain could be a good choice if there would be a demand for subdomains- and it sounds like you have a good idea there. Best thing is that subdomains don't cost you anything additional registration wise, and you wouldn't have different renewal dates for all of your domains

I am curious on how you intend on getting the owner of "gameover.com" to give you a sub-domain. Its a great idea if you can get it off the ground

It is a good idea if you do not intend to sell and will help you keep costs to a minimum which is always good. If you do intend to sell sites eventually though it will be all round better paying a little extra and getting all sites their own domain, besides you can be more creative with the domains if they all have their own.

I have thought of doing this once with menj.org but it never did work out. Partly because it was too much of a hassle to create the subdomains and manage them one-by-one and also another reason was because you can't take it very far with a subdomain.

I think the gameover.com domain was a theoretical example. He's just trying to describe how he would setup and use the subdomains.
