    Default Leasing domains

Okay, got into a discussion about leasing domains.
Strange but people do lease domains!

What do you think about leasing domains?
Would you do this and for how much?

    Basically leasing domains is:
Owner of domain keeps it, of course, but just points the nameservers to the leasor's choice of host.
Collects a fee based on month or year.

Excellent idea. Cars, homes, etc are leased, why not online property as well.

I would lease some of mine if anyone wanted them, at the right price of course.
    Know any domain leasing agencies?

    They are called parking sites.
Like godaddy, sedo, why park, and so forth.

From what I got out of the discussion, leasing costs is between the parties involved.
    Good domains=high leases
    crappy domains=very low

I had stumbled upon this idea few days back since i have so many unused domains.
The system works perfect only if we have very good niche domains.
There can be many problems for both the buyer and the seller so it would be good if a solid agreement is made prior to leasing.

    Hi,

Wouldn't a lot of trust be needed???? The person leasing the name could get the name blacklisted. Or the person who owns the name after you worked and built the name up could just pull it on you or charge more rent then you make.

I can see it now your site becomes the next ebay or google and the lease owner wants all of a sudden wants $1mill a month. Now what do you do???

    Just Questions.

This is a discussion about leasing domains, not specific.

Yes, I have heard of poor souls who leased a domain from someone on the scammer forum and got burnt when the site was pulling in good adsense!

    Yes, scamming.
Lease a domain for a year and build it up and poof!
They pull the rug out from under you.

Remember, the person leasing the domain still has control over where to point that domain to.
So lease a domain, build it up, get nice page rank, pull some bucks in from adsense, and the person leasing the domain to you grabs it right back before your lease period is up.

    Hi,

After reading all this. Can anyone tell me the up side for wanting to lease a name? I don't see it unless it was like a quick money thing like a good Christmas name for 2mo that was already established.

Also how would you come up with a price that is right?

I personally cant see an upside to leasing. Unless you use it for a while, but let everyone know that there is another address that you can use as well. Thats the only way that I can think of covering yourself.

I use bodis.com now. Company just started recently by a young guy called Matt (CFGuru360 on Namepros). Hopefully it will revolutionise parking.
$20 million seems a tad steep.

Just like renting I suppose. If you don't have the cash for a house or can't get a mortgage, then you have to rent till you can get enough cash saved.

Personally don't think leasing domain names will fly. Too little benefit for the one who rents the domain name. All the branding benefits go to the domain owner. So what happens when the owner decides not to lease anymore once the site is popular?
