Default How to get benefits from multiple domains?

I saw many times the situation when several domains are used for the same website. A common sense can be easily understood when for example different domains are used to demonstrate website pages are presented in several languages! But personally I don’t understand for which purposes the same website is made available under different domains in other cases? What advantages can be taken from displaying a website under different domains?

You should always stick to the one domain otherwise you will confuse your visitors. I am not sure if you are referring to subdomains or not but there are many reasons why someone would use them. For me, I use subdomains so people looking for cat information don't get bombarded with cat information.

people buy multiple domains and point them to the same site because it generates more traffic. it can also help your listings in google, you have a higher chance of one of the domains being picked up by google which all means more hits. and it does actually work, all of my domains in my portfolio, that are not being used for something else, point through to my hosting site, i have noticed a great increase in visitors because of this.

it's the same concept as a store. one private, local store (such as a corner shop) would statisticly gain more interest (and most likely more sales) if the owner brought more stores and stocked them with the same products.

I agree with you if you mean that if for example there are company 1 with domain1 and company 2 with domain 2! If the domains are well promoted in web you can point them to one website and of cource you will receive better traffic in such a way! But it is still not clear for me why people buy new (not promoted) domains for the same website?

Can you give us a specific example?

I can see no point whatsoever of having the same content on two different domains, in fact I think it would be harmful to SERPs.

I would also like to see an example of a website(s) that does this.

The only time I have seen this done for any real reason is when the owner buys multiple domains with the same name but different extension to prevent competition. Such as mine.com, mine.net, mine.org, mine.info, and so on. However, I agree with KS, this could easily hurt you in the SERPs. I would find it both annoying and confusing as a customer.

From a monetary stand point, I see no benefit of paying for a several different domain names for one site.

    Good question!

Yes, I think the same! As far as I know many search engines including Google doesn't like domain redirects!

I have a few .com .net and .org and am planning on using them for different things. At the moment I have say luckywebmasters the .com is pointed to that site, then the .net will be for a proxy site and then the .org will be something else.

But thats the only time that I buy 3 or more of the same main domain name if I think and well lol hope that it will become a massive site, its good to have a few extras.

If I can add my two cents to this discussion!

I will occasionally registrar a newly expired domain that has been indexed and has inbound links and use it as a redirect to my site! Especailly a "keyword" recently expired domain!

I realize that this is just a tempory boost in traffic but sometimes this traffic will "pay" for the registration cost plus (Affliates/adsense etc)!

Of course since my first domain was a typical beginner mistake..not keywords, a number used a word, ugly!..I am glad that I found a few good keywords to use as a redirect!

So other than buying a domain in multiple extension to be used branding purpose and getting "spill over" traffic... I do buy domains for redirects..

For the sake of SERPS stick with one domain. Otherwise Google won't be your friend.

Moved to the domain discussion area as you aren't selling anything

Yes, as it is shown by numerous experiments Google dislikes domain redirects!
