Thread: You would never guess what this domain sold for!

Recently I sold slonet. net for $950 :3071:

It was due to expire in Dec 2008 and I had no intention of renewing it. Then out of the blue, I was approached by a domain broker. He asked me what I wanted for that domain. My initial thought was just $50 but then I asked him to make a suggestion instead. He then just suggested $950 and I took his offer immediately.

I was completely lost as to why that domain was worth that much. It is only after that the domain had been transferred that I knew the reason. Let's say a domain such as uknet.net would be worth some money. It turns out that slo stands for Slovenia! Now it seems that the price I sold it for may have been rather low!

The moral of the story is that think carefully before you let your domains expire. There may be something in the domain that is not apparent to you at first. Also if you want to buy a domain, approach the owner directly and not through a broker. Or else you may end up paying much more for it! :3071:

Damn z'pro you should have said, hmmn... I've had an offer already for $1,500 if you can beat that its yous. Mind you though $950 is fantastic... well done :P :P:P:P

I don't think $950 is all that bad though. You were going to loose the domain any way.

Slovakia too. You could have had a bidding war on your hands. Still, not too shabby end result though.

Wow that is cool, I was excited when I sold a long name domain for $150, you have me beat. I never would have guessed that one would be worth that much.

That is why it is hard to price anything because nothing is worth anything unless someone is willing to pay the price.

$950 is still a great price What a pity your not australian lol as it nearly doubles the price.

The complete amount of $950 had been paid into my PayPal account which meant that the buyer must have paid at least $1000 to cover brokerage and escrow charges. There was a real site under the domain and there was no "for sale" sign. Initially, I thought the e-mail was a hoax until I realized that it was from a Sedo dealer. In fact, I was still quite skeptical until the domain had been transferred and I have been paid.

I often find that many people let their domains expire without realizing how valuable it was. This is especially true for domains used by governments or non-profit organizations. For example, the US Department of Commerce let buyusa.com expire and it was subsequantly sold for $30,000!

I have also been monitoring the domains that I have let expire, and it appears that many are picked up quickly, often by domain resellers. I guess I will just have to be much more careful from now on.

I think almost every dropped domain gets picked up and tested, or it used to be the case anyway.

I put up GamingZoom.com for sale @ Sedo for $80 and without knowing anything about Sedo's comission charge of $50 that they take away if it gets sold - ended up with $30.

So lesson learned. If anyone is looking to sell a domain for low price, do it through forums and other marketplaces, that don't take commission for sale they help deliver.

Anyhow - Sedo does provide great service, esp. their domain parking that's making me couple cents a day for each of my many parked domain names.

950 is nice especially if you weren't expecting it

This could be it, apparently the domain reg fee can be refunded if the domain is cancelled within 5 days.
