    Try to stick with a domain over a sub domain. A main domain name is more targeted. Choose a domain name with specific key words. For instance, if you are marketing toaster ovens-choose toasterovensforyou.com or something along those lines.

    It just depends I try to stick with a sub "folder" reason being is I like to use the forum as a section of the site not " the site " and sub domains are seen differently.

    I believe the same question was asked once on myhosting.com Forums

    And I have the same answer:

    It depends on how your web site is set up. If you have a homepage web site and a forums, you will most likely want to use "forums" subdomain. If your forums is your MAIN web site then you should use the domain to point toward the forum.

    Exclamation Re: forums domain or sub domain

    I have one site, which is my main site.

    Then i recently just created a sister site for the forums.

    www.biology-nation.com = Main Site

    www.biologynation.com = Forum Site

    Each is its own separate entity and each has its own unique Domain, well not that unique, just missing a hyphen however, but both are fully integrated into one another and complement each other.

    Don't know if I did the right thing, but I like it this way. Now I have 2 separate domains, 2 separate and unique sites, and now I dont have to worry about someone trying to steal or copy anyone of my domains.

    So far it's working out good for me, just wish I had more members engaging in the Open Biology Forum. I will not increase the amount of Open Forums until more engagement and overall site activity increases.

    Great idea but most people want to save money like me. I use forums under the sub-domain just like my host recommended and it is working out great.

    This very forum you are reading/posting on is a FORUMS web site so it is logical that they would use a domain instead of a sub domain.

    I don't know about your host but I think having subdomains is an industry standard. It should be unlimited or at least a large amount.

    My host gives me unlimited sub domains with my VPS package and I am really happy they did. I use CPanel and it is easy to add the sub domains and even use Fantastico to add scripts. The scripts are added under sub domains so it is very useful to have a lot.

    Depending on your focus or planned presentation, I'd setup the forum on the domain..

    Smile Re: forums domain or sub domain

    As far as I understand there can be a disadvantage to subdomains as links coming into subdomains do not help much for other subdomains & the main domain SEO wise, as far as I understand. So I would prefer mysite.com/forum instead of a subdomain.
