Default Is it worth changing to a keyword rich domain name?

My client is a real estate agent having a one year old domain which is not indexed in Google and doesn't show up in Yahoo, Bing's SERPs.

    His website name is: homesby<hisname>.com

I was thinking about suggesting to him to change his domain name. I know from experience that Yahoo and Bing definitely favor having a keyword rich domain name, but Google doesn't care much anymore.

I need your advice. Is it really worth it? Or should I just optimize his existing website? I have seen that there are very few domain names that show up on the first 2 pages of Yahoo and bing that don't have the keyword in their domain names. So it is possible to have a non-keyword rich domain name to rank high in Yahoo and Bing, but I don't know what it takes to do that.

Also, I'm concerned that Yahoo and Bing may eventually not pay much attention to the domain name, just like Google. What do you think?

What would you do if you were in my situation?

    Thanks

If the domain name is already aged I'd leave it and concentrate on other SEO techniques. . . an aged domain is probably better for Google.

    Hi,

Keep the name work on the SEO. If that was true most 3 and 4 letter domains would never get listed. It is all how you promote the name.

This is because he is doing something wrong.

You can index any website in less than 24 HRS in Google, Yahoo, and Bing if you know how to do it.

The client never did any SEO on it and his webmaster was so lazy that he didn't even notice that the bots were not allowed to index the website.

So one year was wasted since the domain came into existence.

I finally decided not to change the domain name. The client keeps playing ignorant and doesn't care much about internet marketing and SEO. He probably thinks that it is easier to get clients by placing ads on a community website.

So I'm off his case now. Thanks to all who replied.

If it's just a new website and haven't start optimizing it and link building for it, it would have been better. But if it's already established and optimize well already, there's no need or no good reason for it.

I think that changing the domain name would not be worth it. You should have done all the other SEO techniques. As you said, google doesn't care much about domain names, and they are the dominante search engine...

If you are just going to add a lot of keywords it will make the domain name longer which people arn't going to like.

keep it short and use meta tags correctly to increase your SEO

If you can find a keyword rich domain for him, its always a good idea, especially if his site is not indexed.

Using a keyword rich domain is def a good idea. You can usually achieve rankings faster. If the domain is that new its worth switching before any more time is lost.

ideally you should not give up a keyword rich domain.. until you have had bad history with the name or did something to upset google..
else you can also buy a new name and just redirect the old name to the new name... which will help redirect traffic + ... WAIT FOR IT.... (backlinks as well)

i think you should start with the SEO work for the site. Since the domain is already a year old, constant seo will deliver results in about 6-8 months time. And concentrate on both on-page and off-page optimization.
