    Default Domain Name Registars - Reviews

    Part I

    This all started when I had a client interested in a domain name that is owned by HugeDomains.com. Normally I wouldn't think too hard on it, but the domain name is going for $2000 USD, so I wanted to read some reviews on the company before purchasing. I went in search of reviews, but was really unable to find a great site that reviews all or most of the domain name registrars. I understand there is a lot of registrars out there, but a work in progress site even that listed hundreds would be a good start, a site that you could search and get some feedback regarding their service: are these guys legit, when I spend my 2k is there any issues transferring the ownership, etc...

    Anyhow, HugeDomains.com are an accredited BBB business - this gives me a bit of comfort, but these days anyone can fool the system (had a dispute through BBB over a domain name transfer with DotEasy.com - not solved to my satisfaction through the BBB).

    Does anyone have any experience with HugeDomains.com?

    Part II

    It would be great to have a simple way of getting a vote on domain name registrars - I have viewed the threads on favourite registrars and such, but I want to know who to look out for (the bad ones) as well. So here are the rules, if you want to vote, post a reply in this thread that simply says something like this:

    Netfirms = GOOD
    Intrust Domains = BAD
    DotEasy = BAD

    and let's see what we come up with - I'd hate to buy a domain from a registrar like Intrust Domains where I have had trouble with getting the ownership actually changed over to my name after $97 and a month of wrangling - still not finalized.

    the BBB isn't a good resource for policing much on line let alone off line. It would be nice to have a one stop place with legit reviews but its always hard until you start your experience. How long have you been domaining ?

    I've been reselling them for about 7 years, although it is a pretty small part of my business right now. I have yet to set up an actual reseller account - basically tell them straight up that I put the domain names under my name and charge an administration fee to manage the domain name - they don't have to worry about renewing, I do it and send them an invoice. All of my customers are local, so they prefer to just get the invoice and pay me directly rather than remember logins and passwords etc... My policy is to hand over the domain if they wish to move on, no questions asked (unless they have not paid for the renewal of course). This is fine for now, but with an increasing number of domain names registered, makes for a lot of work.

    I have experience with GoDaddy (who was fine), but ended up switching over to Netfirms as GoDaddy didn't carry .ca names and that was half of my registered domain names. Just wanted them all under one roof. Unfortunately Netfirms has recently sold out to Tucows - so far it has been fine, but worried about the future.

    Any recommendations on domain name reseller type situations - I have looked over Enom reselling briefly as it would integrate somewhat with my HostGator reseller situation.

    So far, I have found just two reliable and affordable domain name registrars - Godaddy and NameCheap. Both are ideal for single as well as bulk domain name registration.

    I believe that Webhostingstuff is a good place to search for customer reviews about many companies..
