Any indicators you would personally use to declare a forum dead and simply not worth it?

For me it's when the niche is over so over done that there any many other forums out there which follow the same structure and have the same members, and same posts. It's hard to carve an income out of that.
When the niche is so small that you cannot do much better that 100 or so recurring participating members and there isn't much room for expanding the topic coverage area.
This is of course if your goal is to maximize profit. If your forum topic is a passion or hobby then you set your own goals. You probably should look to at least break even though.

The initial goal (the spark that drives a webmaster to setup, configure and create their forum) is what would help me decide when to call it quits. If the forum is still fullfilling the reason it was created, whether that reason be commercial or personal in nature, then it's still worth putting time and effort into.
