I want to prevent replies before I spot it to close it. I could get the autoclose plugin, but if I can do it without any extra stuff, I want that

Do you mean it could be any random thread or in a particular forum?

You can use vB's user group settings on a per forum basis to prevent users from replying to threads. Other than that closing it is the only option to prevent replies, unless there's a hack I don't know about.

I admin another forum where they have it, but I can't see how they did it there

I found it. It is in forum permissions/edit per usergroup. Should be something easier than editing the permissions of each usergroup :S
