Default Moving a forum to a new host.

What is the best way to do this? The host that my travel forum is with died yesterday They seem to be on the way back as cpanel and ftp are working, but the sites are not online yet I managed to get a fresh DB backup.

Now what? Do I upload the software and just import the DB? I don't want to get it wrong

    Hey Autumn:

Depending on the software, there are different restore methods, what script are you running your site with?

If both hosts are using cPanel then you can do a full backup on your old host and your new host can restore it for you. If your new host does free transfers then they would be able to move the full site over for you, and you wouldn't have to do anything.

If the database is large you could also opt to back the database up via command line using mysqldump and restoring it via command line at your new host using mysqldump.

I might get my host to move it, he did that recently with a couple of other forums from another host. But he's in Chicago for a few days and although I know he can do it in a flash, I don't really want to bother him until he returns.

Thanks i13 I'll give the host a few more hours to get their act together and then I'll make the move.

It's actually pretty easy, the guideline above is pretty much straight to the point of what you have to do.

You of course may have to change some permissions 'chmod' settings but that's minor.

Looks like I don't need to wait a couple of hours, they are back, but the forum is showing an error

looks like they do not have mysql running yet, often that's one of the last things to get going.

Yeah, hopefully they get it right soon. I'll still move but in a more relaxed way. Get my host to move the lot

I worked as fast as I could last night changing nameservers and transferring about 10 other sites in case they didn't make it back. I just left the two with databases.

Well, at least you acted pretty quick when you found out something was wrong...

By the way, always backup your site on a regular basis. That way, you've got yourself always covered is something happens to the server.

If you're going cPanel to cPanel just import the backup and all will be set to go. This can be done by your host with WebHost Manger or you can just download full backup and upload it to your new host, then tell cPanel to restore from backup.

If you're doing it manually, dump your database and import it on the new host. Remember to change the username/password variables in myBB's config file. Search around I did a tutorial here on WTF with screenshots for dumping a DB with phpMyAdmin. If you have shell access take a look at this tutorial on Noppid's forum: How to Backup Your MySql Database - vB & Computer Help Forum

Then just upload all the files from /public_html on your old host to your new host.

    Edit:

Sorry I didn't read the whole thread so I repeated what others said

Yeah, I don't like waiting around for hosts. Stuff this waiting two days, even a week for a host to (maybe) come back online

Yeah that is something I need to remember to do more often now that I have databases. Regular sites I have copies on my hard drive at all times.
