Compu, I know I've seen it on a 'rougher' forum package I forget which one it was though. I remember using it for one reason or another and was frustrated by the way the signature was stored. On this particular forum, the signature was called from the database then appended to the end of the post's text in the posts table. Like Colleen explained, the signature is a seperate database call in vBulletin and most other mature forum softwares do it this way.
I say why mess with something that works. Signatures being updated globally is a great idea, especially for webmaster type forums as people drop websites and change focus all the time. You'd end up with a bunch of dead sig links plus members wouldn't be able to sell sig links on your forum (good news, IMHO) if all their posts aren't changed when the signature is updated.
