Most are the same in one way or another... a good thing to do is get plugins for meta tagging and editing the site in order to get the URL as the topic subject.

I'd reccomend Snitz or phpBB depending on your server (I favour Snitz, but you'd need a windows server) - the reason being they are both open source with, for their markets, active communities - even if the base code isn't well optimised the chances are there's a mod or plugin out there to fix it up - I know that's the case with Snitz anyway

YABB (Free Open Source forum software - Yet another Bulletin Board - YaBB!) - they've been around a while but I've never actually used it. MyBB was supposed to become open source last year not sure if they ever did. If you google I'm sure you'll find a lot - phpBB and Snitz are probably the most popular for their platforms but they're by far not the only ones

There are plently of great SEO mods for phpBB3 which are all free as is the software so if you're on a tight budget that is probably the best way to go.

It's funny whenever I search for a topic and get forum results 90% of the time it's a vBulletin powered forum. My second most seen forum platform is phpBB. I rarely see IPB, SMF, or any other forum systems in organic results.

I wonder why to be honest.

Try new software from wordpress.Its called as BBPress. Though it is a first version it will be updated soon for SEO friendly structure. You can use it stand alone or you can integrate it with Wordpress

I use VBulletin and wish their license wasn't so darn pricey. I heard PHPBB has some great mods as well and is automatically added from my account's Fantastico addon.
