    Promojunkie is correct, you just place a file called favicon.ico in the root of your website. Most browsers automatically look for it there.

    You can also specify the ico file in the header of your webpage, but in my experience a lot of browsers will still go to the root and look for a favicon.ico so you might as well just place it there.

    If you need to generate an ico file you can try a site such as dynamic drive.

    Most browsers do check the root of your website for the favicon however this isn't really liked that much by W3C standards. The following HTML could be used:

    Code:
    <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/ico" href="/favicon.ico">
    It also allows you to point to the favicon in another directory. You can also use .PNG and .GIF formats however IE6 (maybe 7 and 8 too, note sure) doesn't support them

    I don't think browsers support it when it is a png and or a gif. Only when it's an icon aka .ico.
